Released 3/3/16 on Glamour.com
Hi everyone,
Im researching how many (Australian) women cinematographers may potentially be interested in shooting on reality TV shows, if there was an opportunity to do so.
Documentaries have the highest levels of female shooters of any area in the screen business, and as reality TV shows involve documentary style shooting as well as all the controlled studio set ups, theres overlapping skillsets.
At present, as I understand it, there are no women shooting on any reality TV programs here in Australia. I am aware that Ann Alcott is working as a sound recordist in Melbourne, so if there are any others participating, please let me know.
Can you advise me if you are interested, and if so do you foresee any obstacles? If you have sought to, or have previously worked on a show(s), what your role was, and what was the outcome.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
regards
Erika Addis

The ACS continues to reward up and coming cinematography
The Society invites young cinematographers to apply for the 2016 ACS John Leake OAM ACS Emerging Cinematographer Award.
The Award was first presented in 2010 and provides a cash prize of $2,500 to an emerging cinematographer who is either currently studying cinematography at a tertiary institution, or working in the film industry, and is a current member of the ACS. The prize can be used for any educational, training, or professional work, which will further their skills and career.
According to ACS National President Ron Johanson OAM ACS, This incentive has been a total success, fostering young cinematographers in the pursuit of their career goals. The ACS is proud to be part of this valuable program for the sixth consecutive year."
Dale Alexander Bremner, recipient of the NFSA-ACS John Leake OAM ACS Award in 2013, said: Winning has given me authentic confidence, the foundation that drives all aspects of your life. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), a UN specialised agency, has announced that from April 1 new safety measures will prohibit carrying rechargeable lithium-ion batteries as cargo.
The prohibition does not apply to lithium-ion batteries packed with equipment or lithium ion batteries contained in equipment, which includes in portable electronic devices, such as a camera. They can be carried in either checked-in or cabin baggage.
Spares but must be transported in cabin baggage so they can be readily accessed if they short circuit they cant be checked in.
The change is likely to create some challenges and extra costs for offshore online retailers shipping cameras and batteries around the world, and for that matter Australian retailers using domestic air freight.
The interim prohibition, which applies to Australia aviation law, states that dedicated freight aircraft may still carry lithium-ion batteries as cargo when they have a state of charge less than 30 percent, and are appropriately labelled, packaged, documented and declared.
Safety is always our most fundamental priority in international civil aviation, said Dr Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, ICAO Council President. This interim prohibition will continue to be in force as separate work continues through ICAO on a new lithium battery packaging performance standard, currently expected by 2018.
The measure will carry on until 2018, when new battery packaging standards are expected to be implemented
It seems that travelling photographers will not be affected by the change, so long as spare batteries are packed into their cabin baggage.
2016 Official Approval from QANTAS to Carry Certain Li-Ion Batteries
ACS members have been supplied with a letter from QANTAS verifying official permission to carry Li-Ion batteries with certain capacities on QANTAS Group flights.
Camera crews are able to carry Li-Ion batteries of less than 100 Wh capacity in carry-on baggage only, provided the terminals are protected from short circuit.
In addition to this, crews are allowed up to two batteries that have a capacity of between 100 and 160 Whs in their carry-on. In both cases, normal carry-on baggage weight limits apply.
For further details, refer to the downloadable letter below.
Please download and carry the attached letter from QANTAS at all times for confirmation to the airport staff.

Is the Director of Photography still the sole Auteur of the Image?
I would say not. At best, in the digital age, the DP shares this creative role with the Colorist.
I believe color correction is more and more becoming an integral part of the creation of the image. And I dont see DPs trying to reclaim this powerful control of their images.
With the advent of high quality digital imaging in many RAW formats the only thing a DP can bake in to the image is the composition, the lighting, and the camera movement. Not to denigrate these important aspects, but the DP has many more arrows in his quiver, which are increasingly being taken over by the Colorist.
The Origins of Color Correction
Back when DPs shot on film (a few still do) their work was graded in the lab by a Color Timer on a Hazeltine. This is an analogue printer, which senses notches in the edge of the film and
instantly drops a new pack of filters into the light source, correcting and balancing the image from scene to scene.
