THE ACS WA BRANCH NEWSLETTER

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - JIM FRATER ACS

Hi All,

Can I remind you all that our committee members are mostly working crew so we don't always have a heap of time to commit to ACS duties, we are all volunteers but we also have jobs and we need to pay the rent. We gladly support our WA branch as we have a passion for cinematography and love what the ACS represents and stands for, so please support us when we put so much effort into making the branch as interesting, engaging and viable as it can be.

Personally, I would thank them for their continued input and support. Well done team WA!

We will be having our 2023 AGM soon (date to be announced), so maybe you could get involved on the local committee. So please nominate.

A lot of what your branch presents is actually suggested and presented to you by our committee members.
I must say I we are doing  a pretty bloody good job. But we need to hear from our other members too.

So please, contact us and let us know what is special about the projects you shoot, or how you do it differently, or what bit of kit you've made and we'll try and set up evenings where you can demonstrate your magic, your special set of skills and inform , educate or amaze your fellow cinematographers.

If you, or you know of a company who may be interested in becoming an WA Sponsor please direct them to myself jimfrater@cinematographer.net.au or  a committee member for 23/24 WA sponsorship proposal. Sponsors are an integral component of our branch and we really appreciate their support.

By now you should have all received your invoice for your annual membership dues, if for some reason you haven't please contact our treasurer  michael.thomas@cinematographer.net.au

It also a good time for you to check that your membership level is the correct for your current status.
You can do this on our website on the membership page.

This can be very important if you want to apply for Accreditation in the future. Please use the credit card option to pay your dues as it makes the work of our volunteer committee members much easier.

Also remember you must be financial if you wish to enter our 2023 Annual Awards for Cinematography with the entry window opening August 1 to 21, or apply for Accreditation.

Remember to stay safe and well.

Thinking of Applying for ACS Accreditation ?

If you are thinking of applying for ACS Accreditation this year please be aware that the window for 2023 opens for three weeks only on September 1 and closes September 21.

May I take this opportunity to encourage you to start thinking about getting your submission together and passing it by your Accredited President for advice well before then, preferably in July or August. This process helps minimise the Assessment panel having to look at submissions that are "not up to scratch". Please don't leave it to the last minute as it's a busy time of the ACS year.

Accreditation assessments are not a mystery. The process involves a panel of ten ACS Accredited cinematographers, who work across as many genres as possible, gathered together (COVID willing) to assess the work. The submitted works of the applying cinematographers are screened and assessed before voting on each submission by secret ballot. To gain Accreditation a minimum of 8 of the panel of 10 must vote in the positive. It's tough but if the work is considered a high enough standard you should get through.

It's best you check out the ACS Accreditation page on our website so you make sure you qualify to apply and read the guidelines.  https://cinematographer.org.au/acs-accreditation/

Cineped Slider

Are you a smooth operator?

Tired of wobbling around on a Wally Dolly? Producer too tight to get you a grip?

No more move and hope it’s smooth.

The Cineped 2.0 slider is made in the US from carbon fibre and precision-milled aluminium. It runs on small, greased wheels in the smoothest of tracks that allows for subtle precise moves. It has magnetic dampened end stops, no train wreck end frames. It’s very quiet, don’t upset the soundo! Heavy rigs? It can handle 43 kg. It has a Mitchell base but we have bowl adaptors for using 100mm and 150mm bowl fluid heads. Four fully adjustable legs allow for high or low positions on any terrain.
There’s no need to switch to and from a tripod at any given location. One person can easily move it around without a camera on it or 2 can handle it with the camera mounted for speed and efficiency.

Even if you don’t want to move during a shot the Cineped allows for those last-minute adjustments to your frame. It rotates on the head as well as sliding so you can push in or pull out without lifting and moving the whole rig.

Check out ways to use it. https://cineped.com/  Cineped demo
CINEMACHINE
The next generation of High Speed at CINEMACHINE.

Cinemachine has a long history of providing high speed cinematography resources in WA. It all started back in 2014 when we secured one of the first Phantom Flex 4k cameras in Australia basing it right here in Perth. It captured mesmerising shots that are hard to beat even today. It was applied effectively on Ben Young’s 2016 debut feature Hounds of Love to create the chilling and now iconic opening sequences.

With some of the bigger TVC accounts heading east, sadly the calls for the amazing but expensive Phantom became fewer and the tough decision was made to place the camera overseas.

In 2020 and we were excited by the prospect of MoVi creator, FreeFly’s Wave high speed camera. Unfortunately after receiving and testing, the Wave left us underwhelmed as it was not up to scratch, in our opinion, for commercial and cinematic production. We felt the offering was very much a prototype and not there in delivering our standards and what people have come to expect from modern day sensors. We had great dialogue with FreeFly about the camera and their tech and ultimately returned the camera rather than compromise our standards.

Fast forward to today and Cinemachine is proud to announce the arrival of the new, vastly improved FreeFly EMBER. It’s a monumental leap forward in every way especially in fields of image quality and dynamic range. The camera shoots 800fps @ 4K and 600fps @ 5K on its native Super 35 sensor.

In terms of form factor, imagine a Komodo sized body but 20% lighter with 4TB on board recording. It weighs in at just 800 grams and is incredibly compact as a 10cm cube.

We’re currently putting it through it’s paces and the results so far are really strong. In the meantime check out the FreeFly showreel of the new Ember. (link)

Stay tuned on Cinemachine socials for announcements about our upcoming Ember demo event.

We’re stoked to see all the great events and initiatives offered by the ACS WA already this year and look forward to seeing you all at the next one.

Friendly reminder:
We’re hosting a Lens Roadshow for LAOWA, one of the may brands we carry here in Sales and Rentals at Cinemachine.

The event is this coming Monday 24th July from 5:30-7pm at Cinemachine. Please RSVP to info@cinemachine.com.au if you would like to attend.

SALES

We are proud to share that we have recently been appointed as an authorised dealer for two industry-leading brands, Blackmagic Design and DJI.

This marks a significant milestone for our sales division as we broaden our product offerings and reinforce our commitment to serving the professional video and cinematography market, catering exclusively to the needs of professionals.

Our commitment to rentals and sales and our extensive support offering is another point of difference at Cinemachine. Hit us up for any quotes or demo’s if there’s anything you’re keen to get your hands on.

We hope you have a busy and enjoyable run into the end of financial year period and look forward to serving you soon!

RAZ RENTALS

We are thrilled to announce that Raz Rentals has recently acquired the brand new RONIN 4D

Designed for both solo use by independent creators and dynamic pro video capture, the Ronin 4D from DJI is an innovative all-in-one camera/gimbal solution. The "4D" designation refers to the Z-axis (vertical) stabilisation built into the X9-6K camera and the three-axis gimbal stabilisation.

We extend a warm invitation to Cinematographers, Camera Assistants and Filmmakers to see the Ronin 4D firsthand and how this stedicam can help you choose the optics for your next production.
