POSTCARDS FROM HOME AND AWAY

From WA committee member RUSTY GELLER

Cinegear was held on the Paramount backlot, There were about a hundred exhibitors, but the highlight was Panavision’s new Millenium DXL camera featuring an 8K sensor sourced from RED with Light Iron processing and 15 stops of latitude, tuned for Panavision lenses.

Arri’s Trinity Steadicam premiered with a forward-rotating head so you can from hi to lo in one shot and reach out quite far, with tilt control in the handle. Most of the Steadicam makes had horizontal levelling heads which to me seems redundant, since a good operator is expected to keep the shot level, and if you’re off you can correct and stabilize in post.

There were lots of Ronin/Movi exo-skeleton setups and scads of LED lighting systems. The remote heads came in all shapes and sizes mounted on go-carts, Porsches and anything in between. I ran into Denson Baker, we had a good time exploring the show and he shot a video clip of me flying the Arri Trinity rig. And after the Expo on Saturday I attended the annual unofficial Steadicam ops party at Ron Baldwin’s house: 40 drunken Steadicammers all waving their arms and re-enacting shots. Partied until 3 am. Gotta love Hollywood
