Message from Tas Branch President

Welcome to our first ACS Tas newsletter for 2022.
I hope you've found some time through the summer to relax and share some good times with family and friends.
New Years often bring change, and this one is no exception. At the recent National ACS AGM our long time National President Ron Johanson OAM ACS handed over the reins to Erika Addis. Ron worked tirelessly at the helm of our Society for 14 years and leaves us in great shape. He's been a big supporter of the smaller branches, like Tasmania, and was the driving force behind us hosting the National Awards for Cinematography at MONA back in 2015.
I'm certain Erika will be equally as effective as our new National President. She's well equiped to take on the challenges of the role. Erika has already been closely involved in the ongoing process of updating the governance of our Society, to align with ASIC requirements. A renewal of our Articles of Association is underway, and Erika has indicated she's keen to get this just right. The long awaited update of the ACS website is progressing well and Erika has also indicated that's a priority. I encourage you all to read her incoming President statement which is posted on our ACS Tasmania Facebook page.
The new year has ushered in change for me too. This week I'm wrapping up a 38 year full-time career with the ABC. While I may be back for the odd casual shift, my days behind the lens in the broadcast industry are essentially coming to an end. Understandably I've been reflecting on what a great privilege it's been for me to follow a similar career path to my Dad, Warwick. He started full time work in the cinecamera department at the ABC in Hobart in 1966, after working as a 'stringer' for a year or two prior to that. Between the two of us there's been a Curtis on-staff at the ABC Tasmania ever since. There have been many changes to the industry over those decades and I hope to reflect a little on that, in an upcoming ACS Event.
Of course I have a long list of things I should do, now that I've more spare time. Increasing the number of events the ACS in Tasmania hosts is an item on that list. With that in mind I've lined up, in association with Wide Angle Tasmania, three events to be held in the next couple of months. They are outlined in the newsletter below. I hope to see many of you there. It's my intention to hold the one that Peter Harmsen and I are doing together, in Launceston, as well as Hobart. If it goes well I hope it will be the first of several ACS events to be done in the north.
I look forward to seeing many of you throughout the year.
Peter Curtis ACS
ACS Tasmanian Branch President.

NEXT EVENT
THURSDAY 3rd MARCH
David Brill AM ACS
|
|
|
ACS National Ambassador, David Brill AM ACS has had a long and distinguished history of covering News, Current Affairs and shooting documentaries around the world. His passion for telling compelling and thoughtful stories is as strong now as it was when his career began in Tasmania over 50 years ago.

David Brill AM ACS.
The respect David showed for his fellow Tasmanians, as he documented the 1967 bushfires around Hobart, has become a hallmark of his cinematographic style. A recent documentary which aired on ABC Television, gave us an insight into David's approach to cinematography, as it chronicled his work for 4-CORNERS, particularly during the Vietnam war. David Brills Story : On the Frontlines was produced by fellow ACS Tasmania member Robert Heazlewood and Adam Reibel was also part of the production team.
Images of David at work through the decades in some of the worlds hot-spots.
David's remarkable and relentless career extended through the following four decades, taking him to every corner of the globe. He still works regularly behind the lens. David will share his thoughts on cinematography and the highs and lows of shooting and producing many long-form Current Affairs segments and Documentaries, often as a solo operator. Davids passion for our craft is infectious and we're certain this will be a great presentation.

SECOND MARCH EVENT
LAUNCESTON TUESDAY 22nd
HOBART WEDNESDAY 23rd
TWIN PETE'S - HARMO AND CURTIS
|
|
|
In recent months Peter Harmsen has had the privilege of doing some serious international travel. While most of us still dream of travelling overseas again, Pete has literally been travelling over seas, aboard Australia's brand new Icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina.
PETER HARMSEN in his natural element aboard the RSV Nuyina Icebreaker in Antarctica
First Peter flew to the Netherlands to join the Nuyina on its long delivery voyage to Australia. Then a few weeks later he was back in quarantine before re-boarding for its maiden six week voyage to the ice. Peter's presentation will focus on his experience of living and working in a close community of 40 - 80 people for up to 9 weeks, while capturing as much of what happens on board as possible. Peter will go through, kit selection, storage, multitasking, shooting video in multiple formats, editing, stills, social media, mainstream media, uploading, and managing file sizes - not to mention flying drones from moving ships, and the fun of landing on a rolling deck!

|
This week Peter Curtis retires from full-time work at the ABC. Pete will reflect on his career, the changes he's seen in broadcast television, and share some anecdotes and video snippets from memorable stories and his postings to ABC Bureau's in Russia, the Middle East and North America.
A somewhat younger Peter Curtis working for the ABC in Launceston. 1989 - the year he joined the ACS.

APRIL EVENT
TUESDAY 12th APRIL
FREDERIQUE OLIVIER and LARA VAN RAAY
|
|
|
Frederique and Lara have recently returned from a couple of months shooting on Christmas island.
Fred was working as DOP, for two different programs, capturing the famous Red-crab migration. One for Disney+ called Great Migrations and one for Netflix called Our Planet on the Move.
Lara's shoot was linked to Fred's project and also involved the crab migration, but was more of a 'Behind the Scenes' film that featured the way the Christmas Island community interacts and works around the annual crab migration.

For the first program they filmed the spectacle of adult crabs migrating to spawn. The second program featured the spawning itself, which takes place at night, and later on, as the tiny 2mm crab babies return from the sea to climb back up to the top of the island.
Fred and Lara will discuss the challenges of their respective shoots. Fred wanted to to film the crabs differently to previous programs that have featured the migration. It involved a lot of macro cinematography and her kit including a 4m crane supporting a RS2 gimbal , Edelkrone motion tracking timelapse devices , a minijib , sliders and drone. The main camera was the RED Gemini and B cam was a Sony A7S3, the shoot highlighted the differing low light capability of each.

Besides simply getting the new gimmickery happening in the field, the standard challenges of Christmas Island - 99% sometimes 105% humidity, constant drenching tropical rain, salt , sand, closed roads, robber crabs, mosquitoes, suffocating heat, and general crab randomness etc. It made the use of this fancy kit even more interesting.
