Cinema Lens Taster Day

We held a very successful and well-attended event on Saturday 20th January.

A big thank you goes to to the Vision House team of Barry, James and Matt!

It was great to have a lot of younger members, and interested potential members amongst the close to thirty attendees!
Barry covered some history of cinema lenses, talked us through the many sensor/film formats, and discussed current trends in lens rehousing.

Matt demonstrated the portable lens projector and how to interpret the results.

Of course getting hands-on with the huge range of lenses and seeing the vast assortment of looks possible was the main event!

Special thanks to those who helped with supplying equipment and their time for the event:
The Vision House, VA Hire, Hyperfocal, Raz Rentals, XM2, Joshua Lamont ACS, Leuke Marriott, Richard Williams, Peter Curtis ACS, ABC TV Hobart, Joe Shemesh and Ignite Digi.
UPCOMING EVENTS
The FIRST of our bi-monthly social catch ups!
An informal gathering of ACS Tas Members at the end of February.  Bring some new gear to show, catch up with ACS friends and we'll try to have a screen on hand to show some work off as well, so bring a USB stick, or email Tom a file beforehand!

This is our first one, so will see how the format goes.  We're open to trying different venues in the future.

Let us know if you're coming.

Pawel Achtel ACS and the 9x7 Digital Cinema Camera

ACS Tasmania member Pawel Achtel ACS will talk through the development and use of his 9x7 cinema camera, designed for capturing ultra high resolution for IMAX, MSG Sphere and VFX plates, replacing multi-camera arrays.

Pawel has an 8K TV, so you can pixel-peep some 8K footage!
He will also have his C4 4.9mm f3.5 lens on hand, one of only three in the world.

We will then move to Waterworks up the road for a BBQ lunch and then for those wanting to stay on, we will do some exterior filming at the reserve, with the unique framing consideration for MSG Sphere capture.

Member Spotlight - Jade Higgs

Text and images by Tom Waugh (ACS Tas President)

Jade Higgs
is a Launceston based cinematographer and he invited me along to visit him filming at the Haydays festival between Christmas and new years, down at Cornelian Bay in Hobart.

He had quite the rig going, RED V-RAPTOR on the DJI RS3 PRO, with stripped down TILTA FLOAT vest and arm to support the long two-days of filming. A cool little remote FIZ unit from PDmovie made manual focus a breeze, with control wheel mounted to the side of the 7” monitor.

Later we sat down and had a chat.

1. Do you have a favourite film or show in terms of the cinematography?

I can’t choose between Inception and Interstellar from director Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema ASC.

2. Do you have a favourite focal length?

35mm on LF sensor, stands out to me for an immersive feel, allowing for natural movement and longer takes and some wicked dynamic shots with a Steadicam and interesting handheld techniques.

3. Give us a brief history of how you got into filmmaking/cinematography.

Growing up in a family of musicians immersed me in the world of storytelling. From my Grandfathers Sunday jams with Slim Dusty, six months away from school to go on tour with Mum's band, to being in multiple bands as a drummer myself.

Over the last decade, I’ve developed through capturing live events and commercials as a cinematographer.

I’m keen to step more into narrative storytelling and I'm excited for the creative opportunities that 2024 holds, let's go!

A note from Tom: If you’ve got a shoot coming up, please let me know, I’d love to visit you on set and showcase it in the next newsletter and pass it on to the AC magazine team as well.
