ACS TASMANIA BRANCH - NEWSLETTER

March 14 2024
UPCOMING EVENTS
Pawel Achtel and the 9x7 Digital Cinema Camera

This fabulous event is drawing near and will be a fascinating insight into the world of super hi-def cinematography, primarily developed for the big screen industry. This is world-leading technology developed by one of our own Tasmanian ACS members and is well worth taking at look at even if it isn't something you're likely to ever require in your own workflow!

Pawel Achtel ACS will talk through the development and use of his 9x7 cinema camera, designed for capturing ultra high resolution for IMAX, MSG Sphere and VFX plates, replacing multi-camera arrays.

Pawel has an 8K TV, so you can pixel-peep some 8K footage!
He will also have his C4 4.9mm f3.5 lens on hand, one of only three in the world.

We will then move to Waterworks up the road for a BBQ lunch and then for those wanting to stay on, we will do some exterior filming at the reserve, with the unique framing consideration for MSG Sphere capture.

ACS Tas Branch Bi-monthly social catch ups
The first of our Tas ACS informal bi-monthly catch-ups was held at Tom McHugo's in Hobart at the end of February.  It was a low-key but enjoyable gathering for the four members who made it.

Frederique Olivier had just returned from a trip to Baffin Island and was about to head to 'Nunavut' (the remote frozen NW Territories of Canada), so Nick Hayward, Tom Waugh and Peter Curtis were treated to some amazing tales of Fred's adventures and heard some background on the one that was about to begin.

It was also a nice de-brief for Nick and Pete who had both worked alongside several other ACS Tas members at the Red-Bull Hardline mountain bike event at Maydena just days before.

Tom shared some of his experiences and insights from his recent trip to England to attend the BSC expo. Tom was there as an exhibitor for Ignite Digi but got to talk to a lot of people and did a side trip to Bristol where so much of the worlds factual and wildlife doco's are produced.

Tom Waugh at the BSC show with FAVA rental owners Patrick and Jane Ralston who shared the booth with Ignite DIgi.

Our next informal ACS Tas gathering is set for the end of April.  Details below.  Hope you can join us for this one!

One of the founding members of the ACS Tasmania branch, Gert Kirchner ACS, passed away in early February.

One of the films he shot around Hobart, Save The Lady, can be seen on Youtube thanks to Libraries Tasmania.

Another, a documentary shot by Gert on 35mm with director Bob Connolly was about a botanist's trip down the Franklin River, released in 1980. This documentary helped make the Australian public more aware of what was at stake if the Gordon below Franklin dam was built.
