From the Pres

On Tuesday June 7 we have organised Meet the SA 2021 Gold State Winners night, read more about this in the next article, I hope you can attend as the last one of these we did proved to be a great night.

Hopefully you all will receive your membership renewals automatically via our new website. If you don't, could you please email our treasurer, Mylene Ludgate, and let her know. Membership fees are due by June 30 so if you pay up quickly you can claim them for this financial year.

Of course, you must be financial to enter the 2022 ACS State Awards for Cinematography. The entry window opens on August 1 and closes August 21 so start looking back over your best work to select your entries for this year.

Another entry window is for ACS Accreditation and it opens September 1 and closes September 30 but if you are thinking of applying you should be getting your submission together before then so I can have a look at it and offer any advice if necessary. Of course it's a busy time for me as I will be involved in the judging of both the SA & WA awards as well as the Northern Territory awards this year.

Our State AGM is approaching and is slated for August 15 at in.Studio + Cafe so if you wish to be the next Pres this is your chance as it's nearly time to hang up my shingle. This is the last AGM I will be nominating for SA President after 17 years at the helm, it's time for new blood to take over. I understand our long serving Vice President, Mark Evans, is retiring this year so maybe nominate for the VP role so I can train you up to become Pres in 2023. If you want to see some changes in our branch put your hand up to be on the committee. Nomination and Proxy forms will be distributed in the July newsletter. Only financial, corporate members can nominate and/or vote at the AGM - this includes Accredited, Full, Active, Life & Retired members.

ARRI Australia invite you to be one of the first to experience the new ARRI 4K Super 35 camera and Steadicam supremo Louis Pulli is holding a 3 day intensive Steadicam Workshop. Read more about both in the articles below.

Stay well and stay safe!
Meet the SA Gold State Winners Screening and Q&A

How good is this, after the really successful Meet The Nominees held on our National Awards weekend we have the chance to meet many of the SA Nominees and see a lot more of their great work at our own Screening and Q&A of our SA 2021 Gold State Award Winners.

Many gold SA winners have agreed to present more of their winning entries than we could show at the Awards and talk about the many choices they made to produce work that was truly worthy of competing on the ACS National stage.

We thank the SAFC for their support and use of the screening theatre and remind all that masks are respectfully asked to be worn.  We require attendees to book as if we have over 50 attendees the SAFC requires us to pay for a security guard. Please note this is a "dry" event with no alcohol served.

Some of the many categories we will screen, give numerous insights into and discuss include:
Music Videos
Local/International News
Entertainment & TV Magazine
Art, Innovation & Specialised
2 Corporate Categories
2 Commercial Categories
Docos
Short Films
Serial TV & Comedy Series

What can I say, something for everyone!

The DoP's will talk about their approaches, their aspirations, their plans, what worked and even what didn't. What a great insight and opportunity to hear from such a diverse range of cinematographers, working with different budgets, crew sizes, pre production opportunities, the whole gamut! Not only that, you get to ask them ?'s!

Thank you to all the DoP's willing to give their time, share their expertise and knowledge about their unique approach to make works that stand out from the crowd and win Gold!

This event is free and is not only for ACS members but we will also welcome non members to see what the ACS does as long as they book (and hopefully become a member.....)

BTW two of our presenters have won a National Gold Tripod each for their entries: Congratulations to SA's Brant Cumming for his Gold Tripod in the Syd Wood ACS Local/National News category and to Richard Chataway ACS for his Gold Tripod in the Art, innovation & Specialised category.

Profile Ashlin Blieschke

Ashlin how did you end up working in this industry?

I guess the bottom line is that I inherited the film genes from my dad, who spent years as a camera operator in South Australia. So, there was always some sort of interest in the back of my mind whether I knew it or not. In 2018 I entered into a short film competition through my high school media studies class and won 1st place in the State, which lead me to fly to the USA in 2019 for the global finals. After the trip I was dreading becoming sucked into a looming university degree for the next few years of my life, but things took a turn for the best when my dad brought me along to an ACS event. I was introduced to the wonderful Malcom Ludgate ACS who told me that MAPS was the place to be, and sure enough I spent the next 2 years making films with some of the greatest people I’d ever met. (Above pic: Working on Choosing Sides doco at MAPS - Pic below:

When did you first become attracted to working in our profession and what was your first job?

I remember my first job was camera assisting for a solo operator on a corporate training video. I would definitely say I was more of a hinderance than a help, having never set up a light before or changed a lens, but it really makes you appreciate people who have that much patience. I can say for sure I’ve come a long way in a short time.

What’s the best advice you ever received?

To take every opportunity!

Who do you look up to in the industry, did you have any mentors?

All the guys at Picture Hire have been so lovely as I’ve been growing in the industry. It’s been amazing to have a group of people encouraging me on new projects and to be able to ask any camera related question to. Someone always knows the answer to my never-ending queries.

What’s the best thing about working in our business?

Every project is different. You are always learning, being challenged, and creating. Discovering new locations and getting to meet new people all the time is so exciting, and it’s incredible how a bunch of strangers put together can work so well to make a really polished film. It is such a unique job.

What has been your most interesting or challenging project so far?

I recently got to work as a camera operator on season 2 of Couch 44 at ABC studios, which was different to anything I’d done before. It was my first time working in a studio and with such a large crew, but truly amazing to see it all come together. It’s something I’ll certainly be proud to show off to everyone I know once it’s finished. (Pic below: Me on the left on set filming Couch 44)

Thanks Ash, that was short but sweet, we'll look out to see more of your work in the near future.
