From the Pres
The 2018 ACS National Awards for Cinematography are fast approaching. This year they will be held at Customs House in Brisbane on May 5. Save the date in your diary or book your tickets now through the ACS website. If you won Gold at our State Awards in 2017 you were automatically entered into the 2018 National Awards so please consider going as it's a fantastic experience to receive a National ACS Award in front of your peers. I believe the Queensland branch are organising a few other events on the Friday and Saturday so you could make a long weekend of it. I can't give financial advice but I would think that a trip to Brisbane for the awards could be tax deductible - why not check with your financial advisor. Recently we held a really good CineKids event, read more about in the following article. Until next time, cheers, Ernie
CineKids Zoo Event
A wonderful bunch of SA ACS CineKids. |
On Sunday afternoon, 25th of Feb, some of our dedicated ACS members put our six SA CineKids members through their paces with a Photo Treasure Hunt at the Adelaide Zoo. Their mission was to get shots such as: 1. A low angle shot of an animal in a tree 2. A very large animal and a very small animal, in the same shot 3. An animals reflection 4. A shot that shows movement 5. Texture patterns from an animals skin/feathers or an object/plant 6. An animals face, with the background out of focus 7. A silhouette of an animal/object/plant 8. An interesting shot with water 9. A humans feet and an animals feet in the same shot 10. An animal looking into the camera (bonus points for a smile!) 11. A long exposure shot (try the nocturnal building!) 12. A shot with three layers of depth (foreground, midground, background) 13. An interesting shot with a focus effect 14. A symmetrical shot 15. An architectural shot

After the zoo it was off to ProAv Solutions where the CineKids shots were appraised and some of their best shots printed so they could take them home. They also got a memory stick of all their pictures. Unfortunately I couldn't attend but I hear the pictures were great and the event was very well received.

Many thanks to the mentors David Tang and Deb Shaw and Daniel Charlton also to Pro Av Solutions for supplying the gear and Canon for supplying printers and prints and to Randy Larcombe for supplying the extra camera gear. I hear the shots the CineKids took were wonderful, I'll try and get them uploaded onto the website soon.

It's fantastic to get positive feedback like this: Hi Ernie, I just wanted to say a big thank-you for yesterdays ACS trip to the zoo. William had the best day. The day was really well organised and the kids got a lot out of it. William was very impressed by the fantastic camera equipment he was able to use and he loves the photos he brought home of the turtle and the meerkat. He has already put a Canon Camera on his wish list for Christmas! It was really kind of Deb and David to give of their time at the zoo and Daniel was a terrific mentor at ProAv Solutions. All in all a terrific idea and a day the kids will be talking about for a long time to come. Thanks again, HB I think it's great that we can help inspire and educate these young up and coming cinematographers.
Profile Claire Bishop
Hi Claire, as our newest Committee Member it's great to get your ACS profile. Thanks so much for offering me this opportunity and Im so glad I get the opportunity to set the record straight on the real Claire Bishop. Im excited to share my history with my fellow ACS members. So Claire, whos youre favourite person? Although we have never met, I feel like if we did, Susan Sarandon and I would get on really well. Ive always said, if I dont make it in this industry Id be happy being her PA. When did you first become interested in our industry? As pictured I used to steal my Mums Panasonic DV tape camera to film mockumentaries and talk shows with my best friend. Although she looks less than impressed that Im hogging the camera it was one of my favourite things to do other than watch the BBC Chronicles of Narnina miniseries on repeat.

When did you decide to further your career? I guess Im in the process of doing that right now. Ive been freelancing the past 2 years as a camera assistant and camera op when called upon. Ive been very fortunate to connect with some very talented and friendly cinematographers. Without who Im sure I wouldnt have had half the opportunities Ive received. So thank you ladies and fellas!

Claire shooting on the airlock set of The Big Nothing. |
What has been your most interesting project so far? Most definitely shooting a web series called The Big Nothing which I co-created and shot along with my team @ Sharptooth Pictures. Its a Sci-Fi Mystery set on a space station which involved us building sets in Hendon Studios. This was very challenging but gave me so much control over the lighting rigs we set up and all the practicals on set.
Tell us some of the challenges you faced doing that? What wasnt a challenge. We had no money, no experience, no clue, It was wonderful! But I do remember it was last day of shoot. Our producer had literally just scraped together a shuttle set together moments before we were shooting and I was trying to figure out how to light this so it didnt look like a couple plastic pallets and some orange paint. It was travelling on its way to Saturn so we ended up holding a dirty old rag in front of the blondie and moving it in and out. Blinking lights and shadows were our friends. Claire please tell us something about yourself that not many people may know? I love rap music and Im a junior state rollerskating silver medallist circa 1996.
