Light - photography is nothing without it. The angle of the light, the quality of the light, the size of the light, the source of the light, the colour temperature, the throw, the intensity. Without manipulation and control of these factors it is difficult to produce great images.

These are just some of the considerations that a Gaffer assists a cinematographer with and that is why we have organised very experienced and talented Adelaide Gaffer, Graeme Shelton from Lycanthrope Lighting, who will be conducting a Gaffer lighting Night at Anifex 's studio on Monday night September 11.

This night is for all cinematographers whether you've worked with a Gaffer or not. ACS student members and novices are most welcome. Come and check out Graeme's 10.4 tonne truck full of gear and learn how the DoP / Gaffer working relationship works best.

Graeme will discuss the working relationship with a DoP (Graeme's worked with many of the best!), what lights you use for what, what lights you can run on house power, where to buy the best wine, and many other important tips of how to get the best out of working with a gaffer.

There will be numerous experienced DoP's attending who can give insights on their working relationships with Gaffers as well.

Graeme has worked on Features, Drama, TV Series, Television and thousands of commercials. Click on the link below and check out his CV and some of the DoP's he's worked with, luckily he's only listed back to 1980!

Many thanks to Anifex for lending us their studio for the night and to Best Boy Nathan Bolton who will help Graeme on the night.

This will be an informal night with drinks and food supplied and promises to be an educational, enlightening and amusing night.

Vale Ron Windon ACS

Ron Windon proudly hands Marianne Wakeley a Ron Windon ACS Award for service to the ACS with Ron Johanson OAM ACS at the 2014 awards.

After a long illness ACS stalwart Ron Windon ACS passed away this week.

Ron has been a member since the early 60's, he was our dedicated Historian for many years and he was a true gent.

Ron had a very successful and long career starting in the 50's at Cinesound and eventually starting his own production company in the 70's where he filmed thousands of International, National and local TVC's. Ron with his wife Cathie also created quite a dynasty of successful cinematographers including Steve Windon ACS ASC and Marc & Matt Windon.

Our National President, Ron Johanson OAM ACS, said: Ron was a friend and colleague to all, he was a mentor, advisor and spiritual leader of the ACS, whose contributions and forward thinking enabled the Society to become one of the foremost in the world.

We'll sadly miss Ron, our thoughts are with the family, on behalf of the SA branch we pass on our condolences.
