I hope you enjoyed the experience of entering your best recent work into the 2017 SA & WA Awards for Cinematography on the new online booking system that was developed for this years awards. And also enjoyed the convenience of uploading your entry files via our newest sponsor Digital Pigeon.

We have 94 entries this year and few were entered on physical media. The judging will be happening soon at AMPCO Films, I look forward to finding out who and what was awarded what.

Remember to put Saturday October 28 in your diary for the 37th Annual SA & WA Awards for Cinematography which will be held at the iconic Adelaide Oval with pre dinner drinks in the Rick Davies Bar overlooking the oval whilst the formal presentation will be a sit down dinner in the Cathedral Room.

SA AGM wrap up

Well the AGM was a lot of fun. Well the Little Bang Games, sushi, drinks and pizza was fun anyway! Many thanks to Ryan and the team at Little Bang Brewing Co.

How to work with a Gaffer presented by Graeme Shelton

Very experienced and talented Adelaide Gaffer, Graeme Shelton from Lycanthrope Lighting, will be conducting a Gaffer Night at Anifex 's studio on Monday night September 11.

Graeme has been around since the world was in Black & White!

This night is for all cinematographers whether you've worked with a Gaffer or not. Come and check out Graeme's 10.4 tonne truck full of gear and learn how the DoP / Gaffer working relationship works best.

Graeme will discuss the working relationship with a DoP (Graeme's worked with many of the best!), what lights you use for what, what lights you can run on house power, where to buy the best wine, and many other important tips of how to get the best out of working with a gaffer.

Graeme has worked on Features, Drama, TV Series, Television and thousands of commercials. Click on the link below and check out his CV and some of the DoP's he's worked with, luckily he's only listed back to 1980!

Profile Marie Press

Hi Maree, can you give us an insight into how your career began.

I developed a passion for film at very early age. I used to read books and visualize the sets, position of cameras, the actors and could clearly see the stories before my eyes, all at the age 8! I grew up in castle Cimelice about 60 km south of Prague Czech republic, which was a Film School at the time, all I wanted to do is study film and that was that. Unfortunately because my dads political involvement against the Communist Party I had zero chance to even apply.

What was the spark that made you take your first step into the world of film?

When I came to Australia in 1987 as a political refugee with $20 in my pocket and no knowledge of the language and/or culture. I studied English and went to university to study nursing as a safe option of getting a job. I have enjoyed my career as a Registered Nurse and lecturer at Flinders University for many years. In 2012 I revisited the Cimelice castle and all my dreams came flooding back. My partner Bruce enrolled me into MAPS school where I major in Production and Camera.

What were some of your first productions?

My first short film I produced My Shoes has now over 3 million views on YouTube. It was accepted into Cannes Festival and won an Award for best short film in 2014. I have produced, directed and shot a number of promotional and educational videos including: Stinga T - music video Gone which played on RAGE.

What has been your most interesting project so far?

My most interesting project so far was producing a feature film Friendship Love and Loyalty in 2014 with a budget of $ 6,000! It was amazing to be surrounded with people completely selflessly dedicating their time and skills to create the film. We shot for 3 weeks continuously and we did not loose a single member of the team. Im sure it was due to my daughter and her husband's catering skills, they are both professional chefs who came on set to feed the troops. Feed them and they will stay" was my grandmothers motto, not about crew but men (lol) but it works on every level.

Tell us some of that challenges you faced doing that.

I have been told once that producing a feature film on no budget was not really knowing the craft but a fluke!!! I could not believe what I was hearing from an industry professional. The film took a year to shoot, edit and distribute and loads of hard work and dedication. It is now on Amazon Prime, You Tube, Google Play and Ozflix. It was very hard work but it paid off and all who worked on the film have now credits for a feature film. We could not do it without generous help of Malcom Ludgate ACS who was mentor to DOP Michael Selge and who provided heavily discounted equipment. Colourist Marty Pepper also donated his time to bring the images to a beautiful finish.

You're building a reputation in the industry here, is this where your future lies?

My favorite city is Prague, the magical medieval town, I would love to shoot a film there one day.

Maree, do you have a favourite film?

One of my favourite films is The Unbearable Lightness of Being written by Czech writer Milan Kundera, staring Daniel Day-Lewis and Juliette Binoche.

How about future projects, anything in mind?

My next project? Well I have a slate of different projects Im trying to get financed, which is the very hardest part of filmmaking. One of them would be shot in SA only. Also, I would like to write a script for a psychological thriller that I have had in my head for a couple of years. That would be when I find the time to lock myself away.
