Profile Nima Nabalirad

Nima composes a shot on an ARRI Alexa

Hi Nima, please tell us what’s your favourite film, TV show, pet food, place or person?

Hi Ernie, well it's too limiting to name one film so here's my top 10:
Yi Yi, Barry Lyndon, Sunset Boulevard, The Thin Red Line, The Hairdresser's Husband, Let the Right One In, Tokyo Story, Vertigo, Stalker & Amadeus

Your favourite TV Show? Father Ted, Carl Sagan's Cosmos

Favourite place? Haven't actually been there but it haunts my dreams all the time. Frank Lloyd Wright's FallingWater House in Pennsylvania. Hopefully will go and see it sometime in the near future.

Favourite person? here's 3, Carl Sagan, Stanley Kubrick, Antoine De Saint Exupery

Whose cinematography inspires you the most?

I would say Chris Doyle's work. He always inspires me to think with my eye and put technicality aside. If it creates the right emotion, then its the right shot. You have to feel a shot. He started out not knowing much at all about cinematography and he shot using his heart and his eyes. And I'd like to think I do the same. No amount of technical know-how can equal having a great eye. I'll get there one day and maybe be a tenth as good as Chris ;)

Nima I must say I loved Chris's work on In the Mood for Love.

When did you first become interested in our industry?

Back in 2002, we had to specialise in certain areas of film in my Flinders University Screen Studies course. I have a love for light and imagery so I decided on cinematography as my specialty, I believe I was the only one in that class who did. My first proper project/film was one of the honours short films at uni which I shot on 16mm.

What did you do when you decide to further your career...?

I knew there was nothing like experience to give you the skills you need to succeed. So I shot and shot and shot. I wasn't interested in assisting on sets with other DOP's and getting experience that way, so I decided to shoot as many projects as possible. Almost anything that came my way, there was quite a few independent and funded short films, some corporate web content, and some music videos.

What has been your most interesting project so far?

There has been a few. Shooting second unit on the Babadook was quite interesting. Travelling around Australia and filming the ABC doco series Hannah Gadsby's OZ was a wonderful and super memorable experience.

Another that is quite memorable for me is a music video I shot for The Amazing Spiderman 2 movie (don't ever watch the actual film though, you'll get cancer for sure). The content wasn't anything that special, basically a band performing on a rooftop made to look like NY city while intercut with shots from the movie. But it was one of my first big jobs interstate and there was quite a few people to impress, including a major music label. It started raining intensely and we weren't sure what to do. Rather than staying away from it, I backlit the rain and shot in super slow motion and ended up wowing the client, etc. so it was a good learning experience and a memorable shoot.

Location, location, location!

Tell us some of a challenge you have faced recently?

Recently, an interesting and challenging project was a fashion campaign at a chateau in the French countryside near Paris. I only had one A7sII camera and one zoom lens, with no rigs or other accessories, and no assistants or focus puller. I had about an hour to shoot enough great footage for the campaign and had to fight a million flies and the constantly changing weather. But despite the challenge managed to create an awesome piece. It goes to show that things have changed these days, and you can create something equally as amazing relatively without major equipment, huge budgets, and masses of time and a big crew. Exciting times! :)

Where do you think your future lies?

I love to work around the world, in new locations, meeting new people and having new experiences. So I know I won't be staying here for all my projects. But I'm happy to be anywhere as long as the right kind of projects are being offered.

Atmospheric!

What’s your next project?

I'm off to Mt Wilson in NSW next week to shoot a music video there.

Nima please tell us something about yourself that not many people know.

If I wasn't doing this I would have been in the food industry. I'm a massive lover of eating/cooking food and flavours. Opening a cafe here is definitely on the to do list still, so it may happen sometime soon if I get enough time to put towards it.

Thanks Nima, It's great to hear about the different path taken to achieve your goal. It's also been great to watch your work improve year by year and see how often your work is recognised with State Gold Awards including another this year for Venus II - I Want U 4 Myself. All the best with the rest of your career.
