SA & WA 35th Annual Awards Wrap up

What a great night our Halloween themed Awards for Cinematography on October 31 were, many got costumed up for the night and the dry ice floor and Candy photobooth were a real hit.

May I take the opportunity to again thank the judges, the committee and the sponsors for all of their time and continued support. Also congratulations to the 133 entries whether you received a gong or not, overall the standard was very high which is always challenging for our judges.

Thanks to Richard Back as for the 1st time we were able to Live Stream the 2015 SA & WA 35th Annual ACS Awards for Cinematography and thanks to Kirsty Stark as we also live tweeted the Award Winners.

Profile - Tamryn Morriss

So Tam, tell me what are your favourite films?
My top 5 would include Own Private Idaho, Somersault, Animal Kingdom, Whale Rider & We Need to Talk About Kevin.

When did you first become interested in film?
I first became interested in the industry when I was much younger and would make films starring my dolls and pets. I used a JVC mini DV camera, my mum thought the films were great and that I was a talented storyteller.

What area of the industry do you plan to make a career in?
I’d like to work as a writer/director as I have a passion for storytelling and am skilled at coordinating the elements of filmmaking to create a great piece.

Did you go to film school?
I studied at MAPS Film School because it was recommended to me by a tutor at uni who noticed my strong potential as a filmmaker. MAPS are very hands-on and allow students to fully immerse themselves in the filmmaking industry.

The Damsels crew from MAPS

What were the highlights whilst at MAPS?
Winning a bronze award for student cinematography at the ACS Awards and getting to shoot a short film with a RED Scarlet which was a slightly daunting but great experience.

What was your first job/project/film?
My first work experience gig was as assistant art department on 'I Want to Dance Better at Parties' and I had a blast. As an upcoming director, I appreciated the opportunity to see such a great team at work. It gave me an insight to all that goes into making a film and what works well. I learned just how important it is to have a good working relationship with your team as things work much better when everyone is on the same page.

What's been your most interesting project so far?
Making my Raw Nerve film 'Servo' has been my most interesting project so far. It has screened at St Kilda Film Festival and was nominated for best drama at the 2015 SASA's. Since then it has screened at the Mosaic Film Festival in Illinois and screened on ABC2 on the 16th of October.

Tell us some of that challenges you faced shooting Servo?
We had some trouble with the weather but the rainy streets ended up looking way better on film. As the director, I had to make sure everything was a close as possible to the script.

Tam & Andrew at the SA branch Masterclass

This was the first time I had worked with more than two actors so it was a challenge to make sure I spent enough time with everyone. All the actors gave great performances and I was very pleased with the result.

What’s your next project?
I'm working on a script at the moment and the basic premise for it is 'Don't let the bastards get you down!'

What's been the best part of being a member of the ACS so far?
Attending a ACS Masterclass conducted by the late Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC was definitely a highlight!
