After a tough judging weekend where over 130 entries were assessed our awards are just around the corner. I know it's scary but our 35th Annual Awards for Cinematography are on Halloween night, Saturday October 31 starting at 6pm. So get you scariest outfit together (otherwise dress smart!) and join us for a night of fun, awards, food, door prizes and more. On the Saturday afternoon @ 1230 before the awards, we are holding a Wastelander Panda Screening & Q&A held which will be co-hosted with Australian Society of Editors (ASE). Although this is a free event for ACS members and sponsors it is essential to book tickets as seats are limited. 1230 for 1pm start, 1 hour screening followed by Q&A, finish by 3pm. Sponsors if you haven't already sent me get your assets for the Awards Compile and Program please do post haste.

The Film You... Shot with Geoffrey Simpson ACS & Bryan Mason
Internationally renowned (and Adelaide born) cinematographer Geoffrey Simpson ACS (Shine, Under the Tuscan Sun, Romulus My Father, Satellite Boy ) will bring us the war stories behind his career including his 176 shoot in China this year on Chen Kiage's A Monk Come Down the Mountain . Join local ACS member Bryan Mason for a candid conversation with Geoffrey Simpson as part of the Adelaide Film Festival. Free event @ Mercury Cinema Sunday 25/10/15, 2 to 3pm.

Our information night on Monday September 14 outlining how to help run a successful career in the film industry was a great success. Accountant, Michelle McAvaney, from Pledge Accountants instructed us on things like: Should I have an ABN? Register for the GST? Be a Pty Ltd? Register a business name? How often should I invoice? What should be on an invoice? Record keeping / filing. What sort of insurances should I have; personal liability, equipment? When should I do my tax return? What are some of the deductions can I legitimately claim: work clothes, car use, petrol, sunscreen, going to the movies, ACS membership? This was be followed by a special screening of the Roger Deakins CBE BSC ASC Q&A that was held at the AFTRS Cinema. This was very well received.

From a very young age dad would sit me in the dark in our lounge room with popcorn while he set up the projector screen and played his Super 8 home movies. Some were of his early days as a prankster but most were of me and my brothers as ankle-biters finding Easter eggs or jumping on the trampoline or running through the sprinkler. A few years back we had the whole collection converted to DVD and looking back over them now, they are particularly well shot and edited, maybe film was in my blood?

Favourite film genre? I love the old sci-fi flicks: Flight of the Navigator, E.T, Tron, the original Star Wars Trilogy, Total Recall, Predator. In the past ten years an exciting independent sci-fi scene has emerged, which has created an abundance of brilliant films with great characters, complex plots and intelligent writing: Never Let Me Go, Primer, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. Im starting to see more of this style of storytelling in Australia, which I find very exciting. You did a bunch of things before transitioning to the film industry, where did it all begin? My journey into film has been a long and winding one, but I feel my film work is all the better for it. Born and raised in Melbourne, I finished school and left home to study Outdoor Education. I gained my instructor qualifications in rock-climbing, kayaking, scuba diving and white-water rafting and moved to North Queensland, working in the Whitsundays as a sea-kayaking guide, camping for long periods of time out on the islands and exploring the many wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. Sometimes I wonder why I ever left
and then I remember the moment that changed my life. I discovered theatre.

You might know someone who may want to be an ACS CineKid, if so encourage them to join our newest membership category. - ACS CineKids - has been created to encourage and foster interested kids up to the age of 15 years to participate and take an active hands-on approach to Cinematography. An ACS CineKids Member is a young person, 15 years or under, who has a passion for cameras and filmmaking. ACS CineKids will receive a Welcome Pack with a membership certificate, membership card, note pad and pen, access to our E news both National & State, and various screenings and workshops, along with mentoring from our ACS cinematographers.
