From the Pres

I must say it's great to see the amount of drama that has been, and will be, filming in Adelaide recently.

I have just finished up on almost 5 weeks of 2nd unit Directing and Operating on Russell Crowe's feature "The Water Diviner" and was lucky enough to be working again with main unit DoP Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC. Andrew has promised he'll come back to Adelaide in a couple of months and present something special for our members, so keep an eye out for that one.

The judging for the National ACS Awards for Cinematography is happening in about a week and the awards are to be held on May 24 in Brisbane so mark the date in your diary as it promises to be a great night. I hope some of our State Gold winners can get there.

Happy shooting from the Pres.

Filming in the trenches at dawn on The Water Diviner

Profile: Committee Member Miles Rowland

Favorite Film or TV Series?

Seven by David Fincher is pretty much film making perfection.

Miles tell us about you -

My entrance to the industry echoes many other ACS member stories.

I loved experimenting with photography growing up but it wasn't until I hung out on a film set (in my case being an extra on McLeods Daughters) that I really fell in love with the idea of film making. I loved every minute of being on set and decided that I wanted to work in film.

I bought a DV camera and got my first job making dental training videos shooting tooth extractions, gum recessions and crown lengthening procedures (basically really gory stuff). I was a very early adopter of the 5D and shot lots of short films and commercials on this format which was a great addition to my portfolio and over time the projects, budgets and cameras got bigger and with the help of some important role models and mentors I was on the road to a great cinematography career.

Last year I was one of the DoP's of the acclaimed film THE TURNING and 2nd unit DoP on the FilmLab feature ONE EYED GIRL. In TV advertising I was able to shoot some great commercials for the University of Adelaide, iSelect and Qantas Frequent Flyer (shot in Bali, Bangkok, Istanbul and Paris!), The City of Perth, Stratco, Radio Rentals as well as other content for Yahoo in India, Indonesia and the Philippines and a bunch of other projects in China and Thailand.

Meanwhile all along the way I have been shooting time lapse which is a great passion of mine. Lately I've been pushing the boundaries with new ways of getting the camera moving using rails, tracks and post stabilisation for even bigger moves. Timelapse is something totally different and is a lovely blend of cinematography and photography.

Any other interesting facts?

My uncle discovered 9 comets, my great uncle invented the Twix chocolate bar and my birth held up a major cold war Australian defence contract handover.

Miles why did you decide to join the ACS?

To be able to contribute to an important society that keeps us motivated, inspired and connected is a great thing!
