Peter has also agreed to do something special for us, in the week before the awards on Monday night October 28 he will present a screening and Q&A of Mao's Last Dancer at the SAFC theatre. On October 30 he will hold a Master Class on lighting and lensing faces. Peter has regularly taught at AFTRS and is one of Australia's most awarded cinematographers. More about these two events below. On a completely different tangent, I hope you all got to read AC mag Issue #59 edited by none other than our own JoAnne Bouzianis Sellick. It features a great story on SA News supremo cameraman Rob Brown, committee members Kirsty Stark and time lapse expert Miles Rowland. Well done JoAnne. ACS ARRI Alexa night October 10 @ 6 for 6:30 @ Picture Hire, 45 Charles St Norwood Here's your chance to see, handle and ask questions about the ARRI Alexa, XT, Remote Wireless and much more. This is a Hands On look at this fantastic camera system, so come and have a play with the cameras, the lenses, the wireless remote, see what they are capable of, ask questions and have a drink & a nibble on us. Topics to be covered but not necessary limited to include: Overview of all current ALEXA models (there are now six different versions) and accessories; From scene to screen, the decision for a certain recording format and codec from acquisition through post to distribution; A discussion about 4K and the discovery that film has been a 4K media for ages (challenges and limitations); Recent development on lenses including two ALURA Lightweight Zoom lenses, the 15.5-45mm T2.8 and the 30-80mm T2.8, both with Lens Data System. Mao's Last Dancer Screening and Q&A
Peter James ACS ASC will present an ACS screening and Q&A of Mao's Last Dancer at the SAFC theatre on Monday 28th October. 6:00pm for 6:30 screening. So come and hear from this master cinematographer about his photographic approach to this exquisitely photographed film. This is free to ACS members. General public are also welcome for a $10 donation to the ACS SA branch. Peter James ACS ASC Lighting Master Class
Peter James ACS ASC will present an ACS lighting Master Class at Anifex studio, 65 King William Street, Kent Town 1830 - 2000 on Wednesday 30th October. Peter is one of Australia's talented and awarded DoP's and has taught at AFTRS. This is for all members young or old including News, Students, Drama or Doco you will all learn something from Peter. He has asked that you bring your stills cameras along and light meters if you have one. He will show you how to light a face simply with one light, the effect of the positioning and choice of light and the effect different lenses have on faces and much, much more. Favourite TV Show? Game of Thrones. So Steve tell us more about you:
I started out as a young camera assist with Channel 9 Adelaide a few years ago now, before working my way up the ladder to reach A-Grade status within 18 months. My aim was to become a TV producer in the hope of one day producing my own show a dream that became a reality 10 years later. After 10 years of shooting news (the last 3 specialising in sport), I moved into the production department at Channel 9 as an assistant producer to work on the local gardening show Gardens Alive funny thing was I had no interest in gardening at all, and felt I was way out of my depth, but I guess you have to learn somewhere! At the end of the series, I moved into the newsrooms special project unit to produce the return of KGs Footy Show the same year the Crows made it into and won the 97 Grand Final. I was also given the task of taking a full OB crew from Adelaide to Melbourne to produce two special news programs, based on the Crows success that year. Apart from never making it into the MCG to see the game this trip, and the experience is one I still regard as the highlights of my career so far! The following year I co-produced and filmed several TV documentaries for Channel 9, before the unit was shut down shortly before the sale of station to Southern Cross Television. After moving back into the newsroom to edit news stories for the next couple of years, I was asked to take over the position of Chief of Staff in early 2002, where I managed the day-to-day runnings of the newsroom which included coordinating our coverage of the Bali bombings, the assassination of Margret Tobin (the SA Mental Heath Chief), a Royal visit and the tragic Salisbury Train/Bus crash. The following year, I was asked to take over the responsibility of running and managing the weekend news service. At the end of 2007 after 20 years of service, I felt the timing was right to leave Channel 9 and try my hand at freelancing. Id become very interested in new media, partiality online video, and could see the potential in developing a successful career and business in this new exciting area of online broadcasting. So, after a lot of research, I sold the house, rented a couple of crappy rooms in an old hut at Channel 9, bought some gear, which included an XDCAM EX1, an Apple MacPro with Final Cut Studio 2, changed cars to a second hand Holden Adventra
and I was away! Admittedly, I had no idea what I was doing, especially when it come to encoding and compressing video for the web but thanks to Google, Tafe and AFTRS, I was able to learn pretty fast. I worked freelance for 3 years doing everything from producing, writing, shooting & editing TVCs, corporate videos, TV documentaries and a lot of online video productions, before returning to Channel 9 for a couple of years to shoot news once again. Working full time again was like a holiday with the benefits of a regular income, days off and annual leave, but after knocking back too many good opportunities to work with some great clients I decided to return to the freelance world, and re-launch my business. Today, Im kept busy producing video content for the web, shooting corporate videos and providing ENG services to the TV networks. So Steve, why join the SA committee? Ive decided to join the ACS committee to represent and encourage more participation from ENG camera operators with the ACS. I truly believe the ACS is an important association to belong too, not only for career development and on-going education, but it also provides a great opportunity to meet new people, make great contacts within the industry and share experiences with one another. Ill be working hard to make the ACS more beneficial for the involvement of everyone, and Im keen to hear any feedback from ENG operators.
