2013 SA branch AGM Wrap up

20 members attended our Lawn Bowls and AGM on Tuesday August 13.

The bowling was, well some may say, exceptional! Not sure if that's exceptionally good or exceptionally poor! Then there was the totally absorbing AGM with four new committee members added, something good to eat & drink, the very considered judging of the phone-tography comp and a chance to catch up with colleagues and friends.

Your 2013 / 2014 committee are:
President: Ernie Clark ACS
Vice Presidents: Joanne Bouzianis-Sellick, Mark Evans
Secretary: David Woolford, Assistant Secretary: Kirsty Stark
Treasurer: Mylene Ludgate, Assistant Treasurer: Richard Back
Committee Members: Clive Taylor ACS, Malcolm Ludgate ACS, Jo Rossiter ACS, Maxx Corkindale, Viv Madigan, Aaron Gully, rejoining this year are Stephen Webb & Andy Stankovich. On board for the first time are Rod Bolton and Miles Rowland.

Profile: Cinematographer/Producer & SA committee member - Kirsty Stark

This is the second Profile featuring of one of our ACS committee members, Kirsty Stark.

Kirsty let’s begin with 3 easy ?’s:

Favourite Film? Amelie (one of many!)
Favourite on-set snack? Dried apricots, rice crackers & lollies.
Favourite TV show? No favourite, but I'm currently watching House of Cards.

Please tell me more about yourself Kirsty:

I studied cinematography in my Honours year at Flinders in 2007 and began working as a camera assistant at the same time. I've been lucky to work with some amazing people on feature film and TVC sets in South Australia and have learnt a huge amount from them. I took a lot of that knowledge early on and put it into shooting short films. Vivyan Madigan (another ACS committee member) and I were talking one day in 2010 about how difficult it was to get producers to agree to let us shoot on film (instead of digital), and decided to do something about it, so we raised some money and put out a call for scripts and directors. That was the beginning of Epic Films. We each shot a film on s16mm: L'Artiste! - https://vimeo.com/51044798 and Landscape Scene -https://vimeo.com/35834936.

Working on those films sparked my interest in producing and I've been working more and more in that area over the past couple of years. For most of that time I've been producing a project called Wastelander Panda, directed by Victoria Cocks. So far we've made a 3 minute Prologue and three films between 8 and 16 minutes long, and we're now developing a 6x10 min series with Madman, the ABC and the SAFC, to go into production early next year. The films are all online athttp://www.wastelanderpanda.com

My favourite part of cinematography is figuring out how to tell a story through images in order to have the biggest impact on an audience, and I love producing because it gives me the opportunity to do that on a bigger scale. I have a small effect on every part of a project, from writing and scheduling to distribution and marketing. Having a background in cinematography and camera assisting has been a huge advantage, as you learn so much more about how a production works by being on set next to the camera, rather than in a production office. I'm still assisting from time to time and shooting the occasional corporate, but I also hope to get back behind the camera on a short film someday.

And Kirsty how come you are on the ACS SA branch committee?

I joined the committee back in 2008 after the ACS 50th Anniversary Celebrations in Sydney, where I learnt a huge amount about camerawork from the amazing ACS members who had travelled from all over the world. At the time, I joined to get to know some of the more experienced SA cinematographers and build relationships with them. I also recognised that the ACS was a great way to bridge the gap for younger members looking to transition from study to working in camera department. I wanted to help create opportunities for other young filmmakers to be part of the cinematography community here in SA. Even though I'm not shooting as much anymore, it's great to be part of such an active Society and I think the range of trade nights and the people that come to them are fantastic. You don't always get these opportunities in SA so I enjoy helping to make them happen.

Well until the next Profile, cheers from the Pres - Ernie Clark ACS.
