2013 SA branch AGM

The 2013 ASA Branch Annual General Meeting is on Tuesday night August 13 @ The Toorak Burnside Lawn Bowls Club cnr Grant Ave & Giles St Toorak Gardens.

Only financial Accredited, Full, Active, Life & Retired members are considered as Corporate Members and therefore are eligible to nominate for the committee or vote at the AGM.

As usual we will attempt to balance the mundane with fun, so not only will there be the totally absorbing AGM and all that corporate stuff but also there will be lawn bowls (weather permitting), judging the phone-tography comp, something good to eat & drink and a general good time and a chance to catch up with influential, charming, and above average cinematographers, crew and sponsors! Who says we've got tickets on ourselves? ;-)

Bowls will start at 1800 and the AGM at 1915.

So RSVP now via the link below or at least before Friday 9/8/2013. Also there's a link for a map to the AGM. Note - ACS members only.

Congratulations must go to SA member Tony Clark ACS partner in Rising Sun Pictures who was recently invited to join the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

Back in 2010 Tony was one of the team that were recipients of an Academy Scientific and Technical Award for cineSync, a tool for remote collaboration and review.

Also congrats to the team at Epic Films who have struck up a deal with Production Company, the ABC & the SAFC to produce 6 more eps of the Wastelander Panda webisodes.

And when you ahve a few minutes to share check this link The Great Gatsby VFX breakdown via: http://if.com.au/2013/07/04/article/The-Great-Gatsby-VFX-breakdown-Video/PEZVAGYTGE.html It's interesting viewing.

Lighting Masterclass with Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC

I'm very pleased to announce that registration is now open for our Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC Lighting Masterclass. This will be a full day course on Saturday, August 24. Please note this course is exclusively for financial SA Branch ACS members.

Andrew is undoubtably known to you all for his list of amazing credits including winning an Academy Award, among many other notable awards. But what you may not know is after he graduated from AFTRS he then cut his teeth shooting Simon Townsend's Wonder World before moving on to TVC's and then the larger projects many know him for including Lord Of the Rings trilogy, Babe, Hobbitt, Bran Nue Dae, King Kong and recently, the yet to be released, Healing and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

If you wish to attend this special, one day course, you will need to apply via the link below and send us your cv and a brief statement about why you believe this course could be useful to your career.

There are limited places available and there will be only a small cost of $33 inc GST to cover incidentals and catering. If you get on the short list you will be required to pay this cost upfront to confirm your place.

Legendary local gaffer Graeme Shelton has agreed to be involved and is providing his extensive lighting truck and support to Andrew for the Masterclass.

It will be held in the studio of ACS SA Branch sponsor Anifex and many thanks to Richard & Michael for their generosity.

Profile: Cinematographer & SA committee member - Maxx Corkindale

Maxx contemplates his next shot.

Recently I decided that I should Profile some of our ACS committee members over the coming months in our eNews.

I thought it would be good to introduce who they are, the depth of our committe and that they're all not old fuddy duddy’s like me. ☺ So why don’t we start with Maxx with two X’s.

Maxx to begin with 3 quick ?’s:
Favourite Film? A: The Fifth Element
Favourite on-set snack? A: Black & Gold Apricot Bars
Favourite TV show? A: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

So Maxx tell me more:

My ambition in Cinematography is to shoot Narrative pieces as a career. I love being able to shape stories visually, and enjoy the challenge of interpreting the Director's vision.

I enjoy good stories told well, no matter the look of the film. There is no particular style of Cinematography I generally like the most. I enjoy the use of bright colours and also when things are nicely desaturated. I like soft light - I like hard light, as long as I feel it goes with the story. I do enjoy soft European summer light on exteriors though, the light we only briefly get in the winter here.

I like Thierry Arbogast for his work on Luc Besson's films and Australian DoP, Greig Fraser ACS work is pretty sweet!

And Maxx how come you are on the ACS SA branch committee?

I'm on the SA committee to give a younger viewpoint on issues our society faces, and help stage events that will help and interest experienced and less experienced members alike. The ACS was very helpful and encouraging when I was first starting out and I want to make sure that this continues to happen for our newer members.

Well Maxx, it's ben great to interview you, on behalf of the rest of the committee and the membership, I would like to thank you for your thoughtful, incisive and fun contribution to the committee. If you would like to know more about Maxx I have attached his current CV. Until the next Profile, cheers from the Pres - Ernie Clark ACS.

Wrap up - The Adventures of Sam Fox Studio Tour

Our Adventures of Sam Fox night quickly became fully subscribed. 40 attended the night and Aaron did a great job running through his approach and choices for this demanding shoot which had already been filming for 90 days!

He took us through green screen, the cave set, a hut set and the large house interior/garden exterior. He was very generous passing on info of his choices of gear, crew, lighting and some of his experiences and challenges on this demanding series. They shoot a television half hour in 3.2.days!

Talking about generous, many crew stayed behind to answer questions and to support Aaron so thank you to all. Special thanks to Gaffer Graeme Shelton and his team for lighting the sets, to Key grip John Smith who gave attendees a ride on his Panther dolly and Steadicam op Louis Pulli who demonstrated his rig and the rest of the camera team.

All this was topped off with some fine pizza and something to wash it down.

Sleight of Hand & A Place to Call Home Wrap up

Our screenings & Q&A's on July 29 were a great success, we had 49 attend this special night.

2013 ACS Milli Award winner, Jo Rossiter ACS and Writer/Director Michael Cusack showed their beautifully crafted, stop motion film Sleight Of Hand followed by an etertaining and informative Q&A with both of them.

After a short break for a drink and pizza we were treated to some stunning footage from the TV series A Place to Call Home shot by Queensland DoP John Stokes ACS on the Sony F65. John generously shared his knowledge and expertise in how he shoots 40 setups a day on this "soap on steroids".

Many thanks to SA branch Gold Sponsors - Kojo/Marty Pepper and the Anifex team.
