SA Wins the Milli!!

What the?? Is it really true????

Yep! Jo Rossiter ACS did it! Not only did Sleight of Hand win a Golden Tripod in the Experimental & Specialised Category he won the coveted Milli Award for Australian Cinematographer of the Year.

This is after his recent win at the SA & WA awards where he picked up the Milton Ingerson Award for Best Entry.

It's rarely anything other than a feature film wins the Milli which really highlights the exceptional cinematography in this short, animated film. The Milli Award is the highest award an Australian Cinematographer can receive from the Society. It is presented at the National Awards to the Australian Cinematographer of the Year. Golden Tripod winners in each category, progress through to be in the running for the Milli award.

I hope some of you got to see Sleight of Hand at the recent screening that were announced in our last eNews Kinemagraphe.

We have approached the film's director, Michael Cusack from Anifex, to organise an ACS night where we screen the film and have a Q & A with Jo & Michael afterwards. They have suggested it will be in mid July, so keep an eye out for it. I hope many of you can make it.

Congratulations Jo, I believe you are the first South Australian member to win the Milli.

National Awards Wrap up

Our congratulations go to all the SA members who won trophies:

Simon Nicholls for his Golden Tripod for "Chef on the Road" in the TV Magazine, Lifestyle & Reality category.

Miles Rowland won an Award of Distinction in the Corporate & Educational category for the "Future Health Leaders Conference Promo"

Malcom Ludgate ACS for his Award of Distinction in the Nature & Wildlife Category for "Monster Bug Wars Series 2"

and of course Jo Rossiter ACS won a Golden Tripod in Experimental & Specialised as well as The Milli.

So in all 2 Golden Tripods, 2 Awards of Distinction and The Milli. Not a bad haul for our small state.

Thanks to ACS National sponsor Showreelfinder who present clips of the winners from each year's National Awards online. Check them out via the link below.

It is only the 2nd time the ACT branch has hosted the National awards and I have to congratulate ACT pres Rob Shaw-Velzen and his team for putting on a great show.

The awards were held at the old Parliment House which is a stunning venue. Many thanks also have to go to the NSW committee who helped organise the event.

The night was MC'd by Ray Martin, Geoff Boyle was the Guest of Honour and I hear his RAW workshop the day before the awards was a ripper. Some fine music was provided by the "Solquemia Trio" and the catering and drinks were not bad at all.

SA had a contingent of about 11 attend the night and it was great for us to catch up with our peers and friends.

Anyway I digress, so after all the frivolity it was back down to earth with a thud as three of us representing our branch had to attend the OGM at 0900 the following morning.....I must have done something really bad in a past life!

Of course our own SA & WA State Awards for Cinematography aren't that far away. They are here in Adelaide on Saturday November 2, so get out there and shoot some award winning stuff, as the only way to enter the national Awards is to win Gold at the State level first.

Invitation to launch of ACS Photograph Exhibition

All ACS members and sponsors are invited to the Official Opening of "Directors of Photography - Personal Works".

This great stills exhibition is being officially opened by non other than our esteemed National President Ron Johanson ACS (who has a few works on display too).

The exhibition is in the Adelaide Airport departures concourse so if you can't get to the opening then maybe when you're at the airport see if you can catch it. It is open from May 30 to July 7 and is spread over three areas; outside the Qantas Lounge near gate 21, near International arrivals near gate 19 and near the Virgin Lounge opposite Hungry Jacks.

We hope this exhibition will help raise the profile of our branch of the ACS and cinematographers in general. Our own JoAnne Bouzianis Selllick has a few pieces in the exhibition and it has already travelled to Sydney & Queensland.

Other contributors include: Don McAlpine ACS ASC, Ben Nott ACS, John Stokes ACS, Nino Martinetti ACS, Mike Molloy ACS BSC, Phillip M Cross ACS, Matt Stewart ACS, Nicola Daley, John Odgen ACS & Andrew Condor ACS.

So get off your butts, the launch is Saturday June 1 @ 1500 in the the Coopers Bar where drinks & nibbles will be served.
