2020 Outback Cinematography Masterclass

Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) and Griffith Film School (GFS) are proud to partner with ARRI Australia and Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival for the staging of the Outback Cinematography Masterclass 2020 in Winton, outback western Queensland. This Masterclass will attract cinematographers not only from Queensland, but also across Australia and internationally.

We are delighted to announce the guest master cinematographer is the acclaimed Oscar nominated Don McAlpine ACS ASC. Click the link below to read the achievements of this Hall of Fame inductee!

The Outback Cinematography Masterclass 2020 will focus on working in HDR and on large format sensors. Daily rushes will be graded in HDR by the highly experienced colourist Warren Eagles and screened in Winton’s specially set-up theatrette with HDR monitors. This is a deeply immersive Masterclass journey into working with the expanded colour palette and contrast range afforded by HDR whilst shooting in the spacious real estate of LF sensors.

Places will be limited. Stay tuned for details as they come to hand.

The Camino Voyage - Screening at Palace Barracks

Mick Fanning, member of the ACS Committee, is organising an exclusive one-time-only screening of The Camino Voyage, an award winning documentary on a diverse group of Irishmen determined to recreate the traditionally pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella from Ireland in a naomhóg. More information on this fascinating subject can be found at the link below.

This event is organised as a part of Demand Film's line-up of diverse and traditionally-impossible-to-distribute films. As such, this event requires a minimum of 46 tickets purchased for this film to be financially viable to screen. Assuming these tickets are purchased, the event will take place on the 1st of April at 6:30pm. Tickets are $22.00 with a $1.95 booking fee.

ARRI Catch-Up Event

Film folks around Brisbane were treated to a special catch-up event hosted by ARRI Australia at Soapbox Beer on the 4th February, featuring a prototype build of the new ARRI Orbiter and a set of the widest and longest Large Format lenses currently on the market - the 12mm T1.8 and 280mm T2.8 Signature Primes! The Orbiter, ARRI's first directional LED luminaire, offers to be a light that can do anything, with a quick interchangeable mount to swap hard shadows for soft, fresnel for space, and more!

Special thanks go of course to ARRI for hosting the event, and Soapbox Beer for providing the venue and drinks!

NB: New Airline Regulations for Batteries

Whether you're going to Melbourne or Munich, the last thing you need is being held in a headlock with your hands ziptied behind your back. It's common knowledge that airlines restrict large lithium-ion batteries, but with Qantas and Virgin updating their Dangerous Goods guidelines over the new year, we thought it might be good to turn that general knowledge into specific knowledge!

Please note that while these guidelines are up to date as of the time of writing, you should always do your own research before travelling - especially to foreign destinations with their own jurisdiction - so you're completely certain you're not breaking any laws. If you're particularly unsure, you should contact your airline or travel agent for more information.

IF.COM.AU - WHY AREN'T THERE MORE FEMALE CINEMATOGRAPHERS?

President of ACS Queensland, Erika Addis, recently wrote an opinion article to answer the question - where are the numbers of female cinematographers so low compared to their male counterparts, even when the ratio of male to female students studying film and television is almost equal? An important voice in our profession's community, click the link to learn more of her perspective.

AC MAGAZINE - CHECK YOUR ADDRESS!

If you're wondering what your missing socks, the TV remote, and your quarterly Australian Cinematography magazine have in common... perhaps it's time to update your address at the ACS website! AC magazines that are sent to an old or incorrect address are all too common, and if you've made this mistake, your issue could be lost... forever! You can avoid these issues by visiting your member's profile at cinematographer.org.au and updating your address in the private tab. Please note that ACS takes no responsibility over the location of your socks or remote.
