Message from the President
|
|
Hi everyone,
This will be my last message to you as ACS Queensland President. It’s truly been an honour, a learning curve and hugely enjoyable to lead the QLD branch and work with a fantastic team of members over the four years of serving on the committee. From long standing members including Ron Johanson OAM ACS, Tim Jordin Vice President of many years and ACS life time member Mick Fanning through to new comers full of ideas and energy like our current Secretary Alex Shingles, the Queensland committee is a fantastic group of dedicated cinematographers who give a lot of their time to make things happen for you. My very warm thanks to everyone I worked with over this time. I will miss you!
Want to work with a great team and be part of an amazing group of cinematographers? Put your name in to join the committee! All positions are open and will be voted on at the AGM coming up very soon – don’t miss it!
Remember State Awards Entries OPEN 1st August at 9am until 21st August at 11.59pm.
NO EXTENSIONS, NO EXCEPTIONS.
AWARDS NIGHT November 20 – as you know and have put in your diary already
By now you really should have received your membership renewal for 21 / 22, sorry for the delay. There was an unfortunate obstacle with the sending out of the renewals that took some finangling to sort out, thanks to Mick Fanning for trouble shooting. Please pay at your earliest chance.
Thinking of applying for ACS Accreditation? Please talk to Ron Johanson OAM ACS or the incoming ACS QLD President (will be announced at the AGM) asap about your application as the window to submit Accreditation applications is limited to September 1 to September 30.
Big thanks all those who have agreed to come on board the first roll out of the ACS QLD Encouragement Program, and congratulations to all those who have been offered a place. And special thanks to Shin Fung Cheung who has championed the Encouragement Program and brought it into existence.
Remember, everyone, look after each other and stay safe.
All the best,
hasta luego
Erika Addis

Reality TV, we meet again.
After the snap border closures, I received a call asking if I was available to travel to Far North Queensland to shoot some on set stills for a new mega budget reality production.
From a stills point of view it was a pretty straight forward brief, though what I found the most interesting is the way that cinematographers are now approaching reality TV.

|
5 years ago when I first worked on My Kitchen Rules, it was still centred around broadcast 2/3” cameras. The next season, all operators had moved onto Sony F5/55 and there might’ve been a cheap drone in the mix.
On this production, full frame cameras, gimbals, steadicam, high end drone and FPV were the default.
|
|
|
In addition to the gear itself, the DP was managing a camera team of 13 operators plus assistants, sometimes across multiple units, sometimes all shooting the same scene.
With that many lenses all pointed at each other, you’d expect complete chaos, but there was almost an unspoken, psychic way in which everyone managed to navigate around each other without compromising the coverage the director needed.
Lighting for 360° is its own beast, though their strategy was to lean heavily into architectural lighting. While few people aspire to shoot reality TV, I walked away from the experience with a newfound respect for the hundreds of crew members that make these insanely large productions as smooth as they are.
My last day was filled with a hike through Mossman gorge, a tiring and slippery way to end the week.
