Presidents Address
Hi everyone,

This year we all experienced the first ever truly global event. Covid-19 has reached every continent with terrible consequences in many countries. Australians in general and Queenslanders in particular have benefitted from the strong controls imposed by our governments. The net benefit for the screen industry in QLD has been positive, with many Australian and international productions seeking locations here for their shoots. The evidence shows that the majority of members are busy shooting, which is a great way to end up this extraordinary year.

In another first, the ACS QLD Awards went 100% virtual this year, and my very warm thanks to everyone on the committee who made it happen – especially Tim Jordin, Brian Loewe, Mick Fanning, Julian Panetta, Alex Shingles, Justin Hartwell and our friend the editor Navaz Illava. Thanks to all our judges, who worked in isolation, and thanks to every member who recorded the strangest of acceptance speeches – without knowing if or what you had won!

In 2020 the ACS has continued to increase its engagement with those who previously may not have seen the ACS, as a place for them - women, Indigenous and Islander Australians and other marginalised groups. Acknowledgement of Mabo Day, International Women’s Day and Naidoc week events are significant steps. And the social media campaign #whoisinyourcrew created by Bonnie Elliott ACS gained widespread local and international attention.

And of course, many of us are following the trailblazing work led by Greg Fraser ACS ASC on the Mandalorian, which has brought attention to the next great technological frontier that will become increasingly widespread – using the capability of 3D game engines to render live action and digital environments in real time at very high resolution.

What we do is see. We look upon that which is around us and we see it deeply, for all the sub text and all the detail it contains - be it confronting or beautiful. And try to translate what we see into images that have meaning embedded in them, that engages and moves the audience. We are very fortunate to work in a field that combines artistry with exceptional technology and to work with gifted colleagues. The calibre of the work done by Queensland cinematographers is world class and something to be proud of. But never forget that everyone starts out small and our journeys are made possible by those who help us along the way. Gratitude is a vital and important part of our practice.

I’m grateful for the opportunities ACSQLD continues to afford me, and the camaraderie of so many I’ve met through my ACS connections. I wish you all safe and happy holidays over December January with friends and family. I hope you stay cool!

Thank You
To our members, thank you for a fantastic yet eventful year. Although COVID has greatly affected our industry, our community remains resilient. Without your contributions,we would not be as large, welcoming and filled with knowledge, growth and respect:
