ACS / GFS LIGHTING WORKSHOP WITH MR PETER JAMES ACS ASC

Last week, a number of ACS Qld members joined 40 students from The Griffith Film School in a 3 day lighting workshop with Mr Peter James ACS ASC, along with special guest Mr Bruce Beresford. It was a wonderful opportunity to see and hear the famous director and cinematographer team of Bruce and Peter together after a long time collaboration on films such as 'Mao’s Last Dancer’, ‘Paradise Road’ and ‘Driving Miss Daisy’.

Peter James ACS ASC took them through a very straightforward lighting approach to a South African courtroom for one of Bruce’s new scripts - and along with a number of professional technicians and equipment - a full day scene and a night scene were shot using professional cast. These scenes were then edited overnight, so the workshop attendees could then sit in on a colour grading session with Peter James ACS ASC - again another wonderful opportunity.

Many thanks to the Griffith Film School, as well as resources supplied from ACS sponsors GRUNT GRIPPING and SHED LIGHT. Cameras and lenses were also supplied from LEMAC.

Lookout for future events and masterclasses like this, as being an ACS member entitles you to attend many of these workshops - and those who attended received incredible inspiration and we wish to thanks Peter James ACS ASC for his time.

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS - MR BRUCE BLOCK

UNDERSTANDING VISUAL STRUCTURE

ACS QLD Gold Sponsor - The Griffith Film School at Southbank, are having a teleconferenced seminar series (from LA) with Bruce Block over the three coming Saturdays (27 Aug, 3 & 10 Sep; 10-12 each day). This is a wonderful opportunity to hear from one of the worlds most published masters of Visual Structure. While focused to directors and writers, this information is vital for cinematographers.

Just as a writer is concerned with story structure, a filmmaker must be concerned with visual structure. The key to using visual structure is an understanding of the basic visual components: Space, line, shape, color, tone, movement and rhythm. Using these basic visual components, Hollywood guru and USC professor Bruce Block will teach how filmmakers can control an audience's emotions and create a visual style for productions. The three-day seminar is designed for producers, writers, directors, cinematographers, lighters and production designers.

The seminar-series will be delivered interactively through video conferencing.

Day 1 - Saturday, 27 August, 10am-12pm, GFS Cinema
Day 2 - Saturday, 3 September, 10am-12pm, GFS Cinema
Day 3 - Saturday, 10 September, 10am-12pm, GFS Cinema

The Griffith Film School has allocated a few spots left to ACS members - but you must register for your position immediately and be a current financial member of the ACS (you will have to provide them your ACS member number!). ONLY 10 spots are available - so be sure to register early for this remarkable opportunity to develop your visual story telling techniques.

To submit an enquiry if any spots remain, and to confirm you place - please send an email with the subject ‘BRUCE BLOCK’ to: n.meissner@griffith.edu.au

You will have to provide your ACS member number, and be available for all the dates detailed above.
