2015 ACS QLD AWARDS - ENTRIES NOW OPEN

It’s that exciting time of year again, where we celebrate the fantastic work of all our members with the 2015 ACS QLD AWARDS FOR CINEMATOGRAPHY.

The 49th Annual ACS QLD Awards for Cinematography will be held on Saturday November 21st at the Tivoli in Brisbane. This is one of the biggest events for the ACS, and we encourage all members at every level to submit their work for competition.

All Gold winners will progress automatically into the 2016 ACS National Awards for Cinematography which will be held in Adelaide next year. Earlier this year, 10 Queenslanders were awarded Gold Tripods or National Awards of Distinction at the 2015 National Awards in Hobart - so we are always very proud that QLD ACS members have a consistent high standard of work across all categories! So get your entries in with a chance to represent Qld at next years National Awards!

Entries into the Australian Cinematographers Society Awards for Cinematography are open to all current financial members of the society. You must read the full terms and conditions of entry, and be sure to follow the guidelines when submitting your media for judging. There have been changes to the Entry Categories this year, so be sure to check the entry details on the ACS website via the links below.

ACS QLD BRANCH AGM & EXCLUSIVE ROGER DEAKINS CBE ASC BSC VIDEO SCREENING

The ACS Qld branch needs you! We invite all members to join us at our branch Annual General Meeting, which will be held at LEMAC QLD on September 1st, 2015. This meeting is open to all current ACS members, and we encourage you to get involved and join the committee of the ACS QLD branch. The ACS Committee is open to any current financial member, at any status level - so it’s your opportunity to have your say on the future direction of the branch. We will also be voting on the new executive committee going into the 2016 year, and all positions will be open for nominations. If you would like further information about the ACS committee and how you can be involved, please don’t hesitate to contact Tony O’Loughlan (QLD outgoing President) at any time.

We are also very proud to announce that following this short AGM, we will be screening an exclusive presentation of the ACS & AFTRS discussion with acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins CBE ASC BSC. This very special recorded interview by Kim Batterham ACS in the AFTRS Auditorium gives an informative, entertaining and candid insight in this master's career as one of the worlds most eminent Directors of Photography. Filmed exclusively for the ACS and AFTRS, this video contains scenes from his work, which is discussed. This video contains copyrighted material, and will never be released on social media or anywhere else. As an ACS member, this is the only chance you have to get a rare insight into the world of Roger Deakins.

So get involved with the ACS and join the committee to provide your stamp on the future of the ACS in QLD. We would like to build on the successful growth of the ACS in QLD, and we need you to get amongst it by joining the commitee and help us guide the branch that will provide more support and benefits for future members.

EVENT: ACS QLD AGM & ROGER DEAKINS CBE ASC BSC screening, followed by networking drinks.
WHEN: 6.30 PM, 1st September, 2015

CINEMATOGRAPHY MASTERCLASS WRAP UP

On the 12th, 13th and 14th August, the ACS held the 2015 Cinematography Masterclass with Mr Ellery Ryan ACS. With over 50 attendees, this event was a fantastic intensive insight into the philosophy and the ‘why’ of cinematography. Hosted by Ellery Ryan ACS, we also had a very special guest (via live stream in the cinema from LA) Mr Bruce Block (A US producer and Director), as well as special guest Warren Eagles from the International Colorist Academy who gave us a great demonstration in a brief Resolve workshop.

The ACS would very much like to thank the Griffith Film School, whom without their facilities and dedicated partnership in these style of events, we wouldn’t be able share these wonderful opportunities free for our members. We also need to acknowledge the continued support of ACS QLD sponsors FLEET LIGHTING, SHED LIGHT and GRUNT GRIPPING, who provided trucks, equipment and crew for the production day of the masterclass. Additional camera equipment was graciously supplied by LEMAC and CAMERAQUIP, and we thank you for your generous support.

This year, the schedule was a tight 3 days of intensive mindset training about how to approach the art of cinematography. Ellery Ryan ACS is a very accomplished Director of Photography, with an approach to cinematography that uses a strong emotional connection to an audience. There is no shot that is redundant, and no lighting, lens or exposure that is not considered to work as part of the story. These days of quick turnarounds, limited equipment and tighter budgets means you need to be on your game more than ever when it comes to understanding your story and visual approach. In this 3 day masterclass, it was an inspiring and innovative look at how a cinematographer can refocus and examine the reason behind the visual story, which more than ever these days, is ignored by naive, but embellished by the masters!
