A LIFE IN PICTURES WITH JACK MCCOY

ACS QLD AND SAE present a Life in Pictures Q&A Event with Jack McCoy. World-renowned master of surf cinematography Jack McCoy is coming to SAE Brisbane on AUGUST 5TH to talk to ACS members about his life as a filmmaker.

Jack is regarded by many as the most accomplished surf filmmaker and cinematographer in history. During a career spanning 40 years, he's received numerous international awards & made 25 surf films and worked on many TV commercials including a Pepsi commercial with David Beckham and several dramatic feature films including Endless Summer 2.

Jack grew up in Hawaii and came to Australia in 1970, and with encouragement from surf filmmaker Alby Falzon began shooting still photographs; McCoy's work was soon featured regularly inTracks magazine. After McCoy teamed up with Australian photographer Dick Hoole in 1975, both began shooting 16-millimeter film, and Tubular Swells, their well-reviewed first surf movie, was released the following year. Storm Riders (1982), their follow-up, premiered at the Sydney Opera House.

ACS QLD 2015 INTENSIVE CINEMATOGRAPHY MASTERCLASS

The ACS QLD Branch, in partnership with The Griffith Film School, are very proud to offer a lucky few the chance to attend a 4 day Cinematography Masterclass with two time AFI Award winner Mr Ellery Ryan ACS (Van Diemen’s Land, The Rage in Placid Lake).

This is an intensive few days designed not only to investigate the theory of visual storytelling, but also provide a hands-on approach from initial script breakdown, the many elements of the ‘shoot’ and post handling.

Ellery Rayn ACS will be joined by some of Qld most respected Gaffers, Grips and Camera Assistants, as well as some very special guests covering topics such as relationships with the Director, Production Designer and advanced blocking skills. A full set will be lit and blocked through under various scenarios, so this is a fabulous opportunity to get hands on alongside one of Australia’s top DOPs.

Further details will be made available soon, but save your dates for mid-August. There will be limited places, and attendance across all 4 days will be favoured.

FOCUS ON EXPOSURE - SURVEY FOR CAMERA OPERATORS

Jasmine MacDonald is a PhD Candidate from Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Wagga Wagga. She is currently conducting an online survey and interviews for TV news camera-operators and reporters in order to explore their exposure to potentially traumatic events, the psychological implications, and methods of coping.

The aim is to investigate whether camera-operators experience and cope with exposure to stressful situations differently to other news crew, such as reporters, and to explore ways that we can help camera-operators and reporters deal with trauma, while of course being respectful of current practice.

Jasmine is looking for current camera-operators and reporters to complete an online survey, and current and past camera-operators and reporters to be interviewed.

ACS ACCREDITATION 2015

Don't forget if you're planning on applying for ACS Accreditation this year, you have until the end of the month to get your submission together.

ACS Accreditation is the highest honour that is bestowed on an Australian cinematographer. It was first granted in 1963 and to this day there have been 361 members honoured with Accreditation. It is based on the following simple criteria:

“The National Executive may grant Accreditation, on the recommendation of the Accreditation Committee, to an ACS member whose overall standard is considered exceptional. The standard of cinematography needs to be of a consistently high standard, or is outstanding in a specialised field. Accreditation allows the cinematographer to use the letters ACS after their name”.

Accreditation applications close on 31 July.

If you have been a Full member of the Society for a 3 year period you are eligible to apply for ACS Accreditation. For more information and an Accreditation application form contact your Branch President or National President, Ron Johanson OAM ACS
