GET INSPIRED! QLD PRESIDENT: JASON HARGREAVES ACS

Welcome each of you to a new chapter for the ACS Queensland. The Queensland Branch AGM was held on Thursday the 1st of August and a fantastic new committee was sworn in.

As the incoming QLD President, First, I would like to thank outgoing ACS QLD President Mr. Simon Russell for his guidance and service to the Queensland ACS over the past year. Simon has also been a long serving committee member and has been vital in moving the ACS into new technology for archival and electronic communication. His work in this area has been invaluable.

We also farewell the wonderful outgoing QLD ACS Secretary, Karen Hayward, who after over 20 incredible years, has decided to step down. Karen has been a huge part in the success of the QLD branch over this time and has spent countless hours and days, putting her valuable time and energies into this society, so that we can all enjoy the many wonderful things it has offered us. So on behalf of everyone who has been a member of the QLD ACS in the past 20 years - A HUGE THANKYOU!

As for the future, the year ahead is looking brilliant. This year will be filled with regular events bringing members together, information evenings with Cinematographer’s discussing their work, lighting workshops and some very exciting events planned later in the year. One must see event, is of course the Queensland ACS Awards in November. Entries will be opening shortly, so make sure you gather your entries together now. Who knows, you may receive a Gold Award and go on to the National Awards, which this year will proudly be hosted in the great city of Brisbane.

As the new Queensland President, I am thrilled with what we are going to offer you, our members this year. We are an inclusive bunch by nature, so please come along, get involved, and be a part of this exciting organisation. We welcome you!

Jason Hargreaves ACS
President

A BIG THANK YOU

Karen with Tim McGahan ACS

KAREN HAYWARD (AKA – Zippy)
ACS Honorary Member, recipient of the Edwin Scragg Award, Secretary, Awards Coordinator, Awards MC, Web Coordinator, Membership Coordinator among many other ACS committee positions.

The Macquarie dictionary describes the word dedicated as follows;

Dedicated: adjective - Devoted to a task or purpose; having single minded loyalty or integrity.

Anyone we know?

Some 20 years ago while working at the Roly Poly Picture Company, Karen Hayward took on the role of Secretary for the ACS. She thought it would be an interim job for maybe 12 months…well that’s what Ron Johanson, the President at the time told her!

So that was in 1993…..that’s right 1993!

Since then Karen has seen 5 Presidents, numerous Vice Presidents, any number of eager committee members and a raft of Treasurers, come and go.
But there’s only been one Karen….one Zippy, one dedicated person who has seen so many changes, and been instrumental in making some of those changes for the better of the Queensland Branch.

Karen has seen the Branch grow to incredible heights and our Queensland Awards become such a highlight of the calendar year that bigger and better venues had to be sourced.

She has seen young students become cinematographers, and cinematographers step outside their comfort zones and set visual trends and standards that continue today.

Karen has watched the industry go from all film to the digital world as we know it today, and the role of our member cinematographer’s change and evolve.

She has been the warm, welcoming face of the Society here in Queensland, and her capacity to encourage others to strive for greater results and a greater understanding of the role of the Society and the cinematographer is second to none.

But it’s for so many other reasons that Karen holds a special place in all our hearts:

As a daughter, a sister, a friend, a confidante, her compassion and willingness to help others, her amazing cooking, her choreography skills, her wonderful voice, her impressions of famous people…well, one anyway!

Karen, we are all sad at the very thought of you not simply being there, but we smile collectively knowing you will still be involved with our Queensland Awards as you have done so magnificently for so long now.

Thank you so very, very much for giving the Society your time, wisdom and support over the past 20 years.
