March Drop In

Our guest at the March Drop In will be Tania Lambert. Tania has been working in the camera department for 15 years and, since graduating from AFTRS in 2008, has been working as a cinematographer in commercials, shorts, music videos and TV comedies such as "The Moody's". Since recovering from her cancer diagnosis in 2015, she decided to focus on her love of drama.

Tania will screen excerpts from her latest dramas, the feature "Rip Tide", which premiered at the Sydney Film Festival last year and featured in the top 10 of the Australian box office of 2017, and her ACS award winning web series/TV hour "High Life", which has been scooping up awards at numerous web series festivals internationally.

She will discuss her collaborations with directors Rhiannon Bannenberg and Luke Eve and her cinematographic approach to low budget drama.

As usual doors open at 6pm with Tania’s presentation kicking off at about 6:45pm.

Tom Gleeson

A big thank you to Tom Gleeson for his great presentation at the February Drop In.

Tom's presentation of the pros and cons of large format cameras and lenses was extremely well researched and very informative.
It was obvious he'd spent a great deal of time and effort on behalf of a very appreciative audience of members, sponsors and guests.

Congratulations to Russell Boyd ACS ASC on his recent American Society of Cinematographers “International Award”.

Attending the 2018 ASC Awards in Los Angeles, Russell was presented with his award by Mandy Walker ACS ASC.

Happy Birthday to the ACS HQ

On March 3rd 2011 the ACS Headquarters in North Sydney was officially opened.
This was made possible by the visions of committees and members.
Today after 7 years it is still going strong.
Along with the AC Magazine it is one of the flagships of the ACS, evolving into a valuable hub for all members, sponsors, industry guilds and its many guests.
If you have not yet visited the HQ make a special effort to come and see some of the many old cameras in the archives, visit the reading room or just enjoy a quiet cup of coffee.

2018 47th ACS National Awards For Cinematography

The prestigious 2018 ACS National Awards for Cinematography will be held at the Brisbane Customs House in Queensland on Saturday May 5 at 6pm. The Guest of Honour will be the legendary Australian Actor Ms Noni Hazlehurst AM.

The Gold Award winners from the 2017 State & Territory Awards for Cinematography will be competing for Gold Tripods in most categories except for the CineKids and Student categories where Gold Plaques are awarded.

The highly respected Milli Award for the Australian Cinematographer of the Year will be selected from the National Gold Tripod winners.

Vale Chris Owen 1944 to 2018

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Chris Owen on Friday morning 9th March. Chris died peacefully in his sleep overnight.

Just a few weeks ago, on Thursday February 22nd, Roger Lanser ACS, David Lewis ACS and I had the pleasure, on behalf of the ACS, of presenting Chris with Honorary ACS membership and a Special Contribution Award for his “Outstanding contribution to ethnographic filmmaking recording the culture and traditions of Papua New Guinea” at his nursing home in Canberra. It was a very moving and rewarding day for us in the presence of a man who has done so much to record the ethnicity of our nearest neighbour.

Chris had lived and worked in PNG for nearly 40 years and was recognised by the PNG government with an Officer of the Order of Logohu medal in 2010.

Chris will be deeply missed by his colleagues and friends and will always be remembered in the ACS archives.

NSW Branch President, Roger Lanser added this:

I found visiting and presenting Chris Owen his ACS membership and award very gratifying. To hear of his death so soon after is very saddening to me. To hold the humble hand of a cinematographer who filmed so much and gave back to his adopted people I found very meaningful. He had the blank stare of a man without sight but it seemed we let the sunshine in for a moment with our presentation and presence.
I'm sure his spirit will live in the tropical breeze that blows west onto the palm fringed coast of New Guinea and his name will be spoken with high praise amongst all who knew him.

A message from the Australian War Correspondents’ Association

Dear Colleagues,

My name is David Telfer and I am the president of the Australian War Correspondents' Association (Sydney).

As Anzac Day is only a few weeks away it is necessary to remind those who have recorded Australians at war that we march in commemoration of those passed and who did not come back. The march/walk is easy and is a very moving experience. Starting at Hunter St. the march goes along Elizabeth St. and finishes at the Southern end of Hyde Park. We assemble at Chiefly Square on Hunter Street at about 10 am but won't start until around 11am.

In recent times we have combined with the Military PR people led by Anthony Roberts MP.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you on 25th April 2018.
