A Message from the NSW President

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I hope that all our members & sponsors had a great holiday break as we now gear up for what, fingers crossed, will be a busy 2024.

Many thanks to the team at ARRI Australia for co-hosting the ACS NSW end of year party. It was a really great night and a fun way to end the year.

After taking a break in January, our monthly Drop-ins start up again this month. We kick off at HQ on Thursday February 15th @ 6pm as we launch our In Conversation with Camera Technicians Series. The first will feature the Art of Focus Pulling and working as an AC led by a panel of amazing Camera Assistants, with gear supplied by our very generous NSW Gold Sponsor, Southern Cross Cameras. We really look forward to seeing you there. The Drop-ins are always the 3rd Thursday of each month.

A reminder that we have our ACS National Awards in Brisbane this year on May 4th. All Gold Plaque winners from the NSW Branch Awards will be nominees at this National Awards, so save the date!

Our Nationals Sponsors CR Kennedy have an event on March 5th showcasing the new Zeiss Nano Lenses. Please see below in the newsletter for details and many thanks to VA Australasia for hosting the Flowcine night last week at their premises.

For those who haven’t yet seen the Action! Film & War Exhibition at the NSW State Library you still have until April 28th to catch this really well curated show.

Over the past 2 years our Constitution Committee & National Executive have been working on updating our ACS Articles and in the coming months the new plain English version will be presented to the membership to read before all financial members will be asked to vote on whether to adopt this updated constitution. Please keep an eye out for updates on this very important process.

All the best,
Carolyn

Join us for a catch up
with your local camera assistants!

We'll be talking about careers in the camera department, sharing stories and advice with colleagues. We will also be discussing the dark art of focus pulling and showcasing some wonderful rigs and DIY projects made by camera technicians. If you design and create camera accessories, be sure to bring them along!

If you're a student member or new to the camera department you are particularly welcome, but we hope that all members will attend and share their perspectives. Snacks, drinks and good conversation guaranteed!

See You There!

Bradfield College
Equipment Drive
Looking for donations of equipment!
Bradfield College is a unique high school for year 11 and 12 students run through NSW TAFE on the grounds of St Leonards TAFE.  It especially caters for young adults that don’t fit into the traditional school system with a strong focus on the creative industries.

The students are highly motivated and relatively mature and the program is ambitious. Because of its connection with TAFE, the school’s focus is on vocational as well as artistic expression. For example, next year they will have around 100 students enrolled in the TAFE Cert 3 course in Screen and Media, and 160 students will make a collaborative film next year as part of a workplace project. Here is a
link to the school. In the last 4-5 years the enrollment in visual arts at the school has tripled, which has placed quite a bit of pressure on their resources.
What they need:
Lighting modifiers. e.g. C stands, light shaping tools such as cutters, blacks, diffusion, bounce boards. Also micro LED’s
Canon EF or Sony E lenses.  Particularly primes or T2.8 zooms, macro, shift/tilt
Camera filters
Light weight tripods
Slider, gimbal, pocket jib
Anything else considered!
