Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Happy New Year to you all. Despite the rocky start, I do hope everyone enjoyed some precious time with family and friends and got some sort of a break.
As you may well be aware from reading the National Short Ends, our fearless leader National ACS President Ron Johanson OAM ACS has announced he will not be standing again. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all of the NSW committee, members and sponsors to thank and congratulate Ron on his leadership over the past 14 years. It has put the ACS onto the international stage and ushered in many initiatives and ideas. Thank you Ron for all your years of hard work, sense of humour and friendship. We are comforted to know that you will remain President for a period to help smoothly transition your successor and will continue your work on the International stage.
I’m very pleased to announce that our HDR test day, organised by Tom Gleeson and Ben Allan ACS CSI from our National Technical Committee, finally went ahead on Jan 10th thanks to the support of an enthusiastic group of people. Many thanks to our guest DOP, Toby Oliver ACS who said it was a really valuable day. Thanks to Steve Schofield for his generosity in supplying the studio space along with the talented Alan Fraser. Thank you to Lizz Vernon, Aleksei Vanamois, Mikey Hamer and Sidat De Silva for helping with all the gear. A big thank you also to Scott Bird, Simon Alberry form Cutting Edge, Nic Godoy from Panavision and Anthony Kable from Sony who all helped make this day happen. I look forward to seeing the completed film that shares their results and insights.
In response to some of the ACS Camera Workforce Census feedback, we are pleased to announce as part of Small Business Month in March, that ACS NSW will be running two workshops designed for creatives negotiating a freelance industry. The first on March 2nd is titled “Being Well” addressing mental health in creative industry. The second on March 31st is called “Money Is Not a Dirty Word” addressing all things financial whether working freelance, contract or in a small business. Both these workshops will be free to members and sponsors thanks to the hard work of Velinda Wardell ACS.
Thanks to David Lewis ACS (our National CineKids coordinator) and his team, who held another successful CineKids Zoom meet-up last weekend so that our younger members could share where they were at, some of their work, new gear and get some advice on their plans for 2022.
For those of you who have been missing the big screen of late and are a bit hesitant to sit indoors at the cinema, we’ve put together some great outdoor cinema events that are running across Sydney this summer. Please see below for some links…happy viewing.
Let’s hope 2022 turns a corner soon and as we continue to try and work during this challenging wave please keep in mind our ACS sponsors for any services or equipment that you may need,
All the best,
Carolyn
