12th November 2023
A Message from the NSW President
L to R: Carolyn Constantine ACS (NSW President), Erica Addis (National President) and Tamara Penniket (ACT President)

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

What an amazing celebration of cinematography with our community at the ACS NSW & ACT Branch Awards 2023 at the Hilton Sydney last weekend.  It was great to see so many members and sponsors in the room all enjoying themselves and world class imagery up on the 2 x 11m LED screens!

A big thank you to all our sponsors including our Major National Sponsor Creamsource and all our NSW Sponsors including our wonderful Major Platinum Sponsor TDC, Diamond Sponsor Georges, Gold Sponsor Southern Cross Cameras (SCC) and Silver Sponsors Spectrum, Macquarie Commercial Financial, Blue Post, PDV and Digital Pigeon. We couldn’t put on such an amazing night without all of your support.

At a time when the world seems very fractured and distressing, it was great to feel the strength of our community, and I thank our Guest Of Honour, trailblazing cinematographer, Allan Collins ACS for his heartfelt words that helped set the tone of the night. We were honoured to have Allan amongst us, he is an incredible cinematographer and has been a friend and mentor to many.

Our Master of Ceremonies, Ray Martin AM, ever the professional, hosted us through the night with time to spare to mingle. Thank you Ray from all of us.

Thanks also to Uncle Allen Madden for his good humoured Welcome to Country which was very well received.

We were also very honoured to have our ACS National President, Erika Addis attend our awards along with ACT President Tamara Penniket, both addressing the room with very poignant speeches. I also had the privilege of presenting Rob Jones from Lemac an ACS Lifetime Appreciation Award as he retires after 40 years in the film industry.

It was truly a night of celebration with NSW welcoming 7 newly accredited members;

#449 Mark Bliss ACS
#452 Glenn Hanns ACS
#456 Simon Morris  ACS
#459 Benjamin Jasper ACS
#460 Eric Murray Lui  ACS
#462 Emma Paine ACS
#464 Dave May ACS

Congratulations, it was great to see you all up there receiving your letters.

To all our Awards Judges and the Accreditation panel, thank you for your wisdom across the many days spent ensuring the fairness and success of this very important process.

The night wouldn't have come together without the teamwork of our wonderful NSW committee, in particular our Chair of Judges Aleksei Vanamois and committee members Simeon Bryan, Kevin Hudson ACS, Sidat de Silva, David Wakeley ACS, Molly Sutherland, Sissy Reyes, Peter Coleman ACS, Velinda Wardell ACS, Matt Ryan, Lizz Vernon and ACT President Tamara Penniket.  A big thank you also to our talented photographers Phil Erbacher, Velinda Wardell ACS, Harrison Upfold and Annalise Kafetzi who were able to capture some great shots of the celebrations.

And let’s not forget our unsung heros, Geoff Anderson from Sonic Sight and Tim Stackpool who have worked behind the AV ops desk for 32 years of ACS Awards. You couldn’t ask for better partners and this was their last year with us as a team. We were thrilled to surprise them at the end of the awards with an ACS award of Appreciation of their own. Thank you Geoff and Tim.

Congratulations to all our entrants & award winners on the night, there really were many impressive images up on screen, with the Best of Show Judges Prize going to newcomer Chris Benny for his work on the documentary On the Fence. He couldn’t believe it! Great work Chris!

This week we have heard welcome news of the actors and writers strike breaking in the US.  The last few months have been tough for many as the ongoing strike had started to have a heavy flow on affect here.  I look forward to us all getting back to work and next year being a busy one.

All the best,

October Drop-in

L to R Ray Martin AM and Andy Taylor ACS (standing), James Gilling, Les Seymour, Michael Cox, Neale Maude and Max Uechtritz (with David Brill AM ACS on the screen)
A well attended, fascinating and at times emotional evening discussing the challenging life of a war cinematographer. Neale Maude screened his short film 'Behind the Camera', created specifically for the exhibition Action, Film and War now on at the State Library till April next year. It contained intimate interviews with many of those present, reflecting upon what drew them to the work as well as hair raising stories of danger and near misses.
Many present felt that this subject deserved a full length or even serialized version as there were so many interesting facets to the documentary. Friends who had been killed in conflict were remembered and the question asked about whether these brave cinematographers received their true recognition.
