Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Happy New Year to you all. I hope that everyone enjoyed some downtime over the holiday period, which seemed to flash by, and here we are already well into 2023. It’s shaping up to be a busy year!

Sadly we have had two members pass away recently.  Long standing NSW member, Costa Margaritis ACS, member #51 and pioneering Tasmanian honorary member Dorothy Hallam. The ACS extends our condolences to the friends and family of both members who contributed much to the industry and cinematography in Australia.

Our December Festive Drop In with ARRI Australia was a fantastic event. It was great to see such a good turn out and a big thanks to ARRI for hosting at their new HQ.

This months Drop In is going to be one not to miss, with Ben Allan ACS CSI and Director Clara Chong taking us behind the scenes on the making of the feature “Dark Noise” where they applied an innovative work practice to shoot quickly whilst maintaining the quality and integrity of their images. We will also have new gear to check out with Kayell presenting some new lighting units from Aputure.

Congratulations to Mandy Walker AM ACS ASC on being nominated for an Oscar for her cinematography work on Elvis. Such an amazing achievement, just to be nominated, and everyone at the ACS will be behind you on Oscar night, which will be Sunday March 12th 8pm in LA ( Monday AEST).

Don’t forget that the John Leake OAM ACS Emerging Cinematographer Award  supported by Panavision opens for entries on March 1st , so now is the time to get your applications started.

Our National ACS Awards 2023 will be held in Sydney this year in the Crystal Ballroom at Luna Park on Saturday May 6th with some satellite events in the days prior, so SAVE THE DATE to celebrate the best cinematography from across Australia.

Before I sign off, I’d like to acknowledge the terrible humanitarian tradegy in Turkiye and Syria and send our ACS strength and support to our colleagues and all the people impacted by this tragedy. I encourage members to consider donating to the Red Cross Appeal as a way of helping from afar.

All the best,
Carolyn

Ben Allan ACS CSI presents a BTS on his recently completed feature "Dark Noise" with Director Clara Chong
and...
Kayell present the latest in Aputure Lighting
DARK NOISE began shooting in May 2020, after the first NSW COVID lockdown and even before the release of the industry COVID protocols. The film has been honoured as a Feature Film Semi-Finalist in the BAFTA & Academy Award Affiliated2022 Rhode Island International Film Festival and with an Honourable Mention in the 2023 Paris International Film Festival.
Writer-Director Clara Chong and Producer-Cinematographer Ben Allan ACS CSI will present some example scenes and explain how they used technology to shoot nearly 5 pages of drama per day while working only 8 hour days because of COVID precautions.  While this was done because of early COVID conditions, Chong and Allan have discovered techniques that can be applied to any production to maintain reasonable working hours.
They will also talk about mixing and matching footage at different resolutions from ARRI and Blackmagic cameras into a seamless post production pipeline for 4K cinema finish.  Clara and Ben will break down actual scenes and explain how they were achieved on schedule and also some of the big “gotchas” to avoid for low budget film makers working fast while still allowing time for the actors to do their work.

ACS Sponsor Aputure Lighting are one of the most popular brands of professional lighting equipment in the world and their Asia Pacific Director of Sales & Marketing Jimmy Lim, will be giving a presentation to the ACS February Drop-In while visiting Australia.
Aputure and their Australian distributor Kayell, who are also a valued ACS sponsor, will be showing a range of Aputure’s lighting units and discussing where the cutting edge of professional LED lighting will be going in the near future.

See you there!

The 2023 John Leake OAM ACS
Emerging Cinematographer Award
(entries open 1st March).

The Award provides a prize of $2,400 cash to an emerging cinematographer who is either currently studying cinematography at a tertiary institution, or has begun working in the film industry, and is a current member of the ACS. The prize can be used for any educational, training, or professional work that will further their skills and career in cinematography.

The Award is generously supported by Panavision Australia providing equipment to be used for practical work in testing creative ideas. This incentive has been a great success, fostering young cinematographers in the pursuit of their career goals. The ACS is very proud to be part of this valuable program.

The Award is named in honour of the Australian Cinematographers Society co- founder, John Leake OAM ACS (1927-2009). John began his cinematographic career as a 15-year-old with Movietone News in 1944 before moving on to Supreme Sound Studios. He served as both NSW President and Federal President of the ACS and was the Society’s Official Historian until his passing.
