Dear Friends and Colleagues,
This year the NSW Branch is hosting the 53rd ACS National Awards for Cinematography 2023 at Sydney’s iconic Luna Park on Saturday May 6th from 6pm. As the date fast approaches, I encourage you all to come and join the celebrations. We only get to host The Nationals once every five years, and whether you are a nominee or not it’s a great night to catch up with fellow cines and sponsors from across the country as well as support and celebrate the impressive work of your colleagues. Our Guest of Honour this year will be Oscar winning cinematographer, Russell Boyd AO ACS ASC. Another reason to celebrate!
Leading up to the Awards we have a number of FREE satellite events which I also encourage you to support. We begin on Friday May 5th with an Open House at HQ in Sydney from 2-5pm. On Friday night there is a screening at AFTRS Theatre sponsored by Panavision of the action thriller feature The Gray Man followed by a Q & A with Stephen F. Windon ACS ASC. After the screening, Rosco & Leitz have organised a fantastic drinks and food night at the Urban Winery next door to AFTRS. Then on Saturday May 6th at 10am, join us for the very popular Meet the Nominees Event moderated by Kim Batterham ACS and kindly sponsored by ARRI Australia followed by a presentation by Rosco of the new RDX Lab system.
Links to buy tickets to the awards or register for 2 of the Satellite events are listed in this newsletter. Please purchase your Awards tickets by Friday April 28th as we need to know numbers for catering. The Open House at HQ does not require registration, you can just drop in between 2-5pm and meet some of our interstate guests.
Last month’s Lens Night Drop In was super popular. A big thank you to Atlas Lens Co, Canon, Laowa, Lemac and Andy Taylor ACS for such a hands on demo of so much new glass.
For our April Drop In next Thursday April 20th from 6pm, we will be joined by international cinematographer, Marc Spicer ACS. Marc has worked on feature drama in many countries around the world as both a Director of Photography and operator on a wide range of films including the Escape Room and the Fast & Furious series. An expert in shooting action and horror, Marc is a very generous speaker and only in Sydney for a short time so this is one not to miss!
Thank you to all our National and NSW Sponsors who attended the ACS Sponsor’s Brunch last month. It was great to catch up in person and for the ACS to be able to show how appreciated all your continued support is to the Society.
As we commemorate Anzac Day this month, I’d like to acknowledge all of our colleagues who have, and continue to, risk their lives working in war zones to bring us the images and stories that remind us of the horrors of war. Some of them never to return. Lest We Forget.
All the best,
Carolyn

A 5 day Steadicam Masterclass
ShotClass is hosting Louis Puli SOC with his highly regarded 5 day Steadicam course on 15th – 19th May, 2023 in Melbourne, Australia.
Join ShotClass (ACS Victoria Silver Sponsor), for a specialised full 5 day masterclass to train you in the skills required to be a professional Steadicam operator or assistant. Lead by one of Australia’s foremost Steadicam Operators, ACS member Louis Puli SOC, who is renowned as one of the best instructors and practitioners. Louis will be supported by 2 - 3 other professional Steadicam operators to teach you all the tricks. Class size is small and there is plenty of gear and rigs so you will be kept busy every minute: learning, experimenting, practising and finessing. The 5 day course will cover everything from building and balancing to operating in different modes, configurations and scenarios. This course will demonstrate all you need to know to work with Steadicam and similar rigs either as an operator or camera assistant. Everyone is welcome. Supported by a camera and gripping crew and utilising various types of camera supports and vehicles, we will recreate a very realistic set-like environment. Meals and drinks are provided each day – and you’ll even get a complimentary T-Shirt on completion.
Applications are not required for this masterclass. Places are limited to 12 and it is first come, first served, so don’t delay.
