ACS NSW
11th July 2021
A message from the President
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Well, here we are again, back in lockdown!! I do hope everyone is staying safe and making the most of any extra time researching new gear, spending time with immediate family, catching up on missed shows or podcasts, sorting out their tax or in pre for their next project. For those shooting at the moment, please make sure your teams are following protocols so we can protect our industry and get out of this terrible situation sooner rather than later.

I would also like to acknowledge this week being NAIDOC week with the theme of “Healing country.” There are some wonderful stories screening this week on free to air and many other online platforms with many of these images being shot by some of our members. The ACS celebrates NAIDOC week and all the talented indigenous storytellers and the lands on which we live and work.

This month we are lucky to have Thomas Hancock as our guest for the July ACS NSW Zoom In which will be held as an online webinar due to the current lockdown.  Tom joins us after a two-year posting at the Middle East bureau for ABC TV.  From Lebanon to the US Elections, Tom has had a busy schedule filming daily news, 7:30 Report and Foreign Correspondent. Please register for this webinar via the link provided.

Membership renewals have just gone out and apologies if anyone received our email twice. We are just getting up to speed with a new automated system. Please note that membership fees need to be paid before you can enter this year ACS awards or nominate or vote in the upcoming AGM.
The next ACS NSW Branch AGM meeting will be held at the ACS HQ on Thursday 19th August @ 6:30 pm Subject to Covid-19 Health recommendations, if restrictions still apply by this date we will hold the meeting via Zoom. Nominations close midnight Thursday 12th August, 7 days prior to the NSW Branch AGM. I would encourage anyone who would like to get involved with the ACS committee or executive to nominate, we are always happy to have new people that would like to contribute and help shape the future of our Society.

Great to hear some news from some of our NSW sponsors this month with Southern Cross Films new set of Cooke Full Frame S7A, 1.8x lenses about to get a workout on the new feature being shot by Shelley Farthing-Dawe.

Cinoptix has recently acquired the Bolt High-Speed Camera Robot as part of its inventory that includes Alexa LF, Alexa Mini LF, Phantom Flex4K High-Speed Camera, ARRI Signature Primes, Cooke Prime lenses, Leitz Prime lenses, and more.

Congratulations to David Wakeley ACS who held another really successful ACS Expat International members Zoom Chat on July 4th with many members joining in from all parts of the world. This has been a really great initiative and thoroughly enjoyed by all that take part.
The next Cinekids Workshop sponsored by Videocraft and organised by our National Cinekids Coordinator, David Lewis ACS will be held at ACS HQ on August 1st, 10 am-12 pm. If you know any budding filmmakers, why not see if they are interested in joining up. Please see our Cinekids section in this newsletter for further information.

We are still searching for our new newsletter editor. The new editor will be in great company as before Lizz Vernon took over the task we were lucky to have David Burr ACS on the job for the previous 9 years. David managed to put together 216 issues some created from locations in remote parts of the world. Thank you so much to both David and Lizz and I look forward to our next editor stepping up soon. If you are interested please feel free to email me at cconstantine@cinematographer.net.au
I'd love to create the NSW Newsletter: email cconstantine@cinematographer.net.au
Stay safe everyone and hopefully we will be out of this lockdown soon.

All the best,
Carolyn

ACS NSW March ONLINE Zoom-In

6pm - 9pm, Thursday, 15th July, 2021

Guest Speaker ~ Thomas Hancock
After joining the ABC in 2010 as an assistant editor, then editor, Tom moved into news/current affairs as a camera operator in 2013. Since then, he's worked on the nightly news, "Four Corners", "Foreign Correspondent", and "Australian Story". He's currently full-time on "7.30".
Tom spent almost two years (2019-20) as the ABC's Middle East camera operator, based in Beirut. He covered everything from the overthrow of the Lebanese government to the defeat of the Islamic State in Syria. Packed as it was, the posting was cut short due to the pandemic and Tom and his wife were recalled to Sydney.

Prior to the ABC, Tom worked in corporate communications as a stills photographer and videographer. He holds a Bachelor of Communications (Hons) in Media Production from the University of Newcastle.

For any members who may be interested in some viewing material in the lead-up, here is a link, below, to the Foreign Correspondent program 'Revolution In The Time of Corona' which paints an in-depth portrait of living/working in a Lebanon gripped by economic, political and (last) Covid crises!

It was literally filmed in our last few weeks of living in Lebanon before we had to leave due to the local Covid risk.
