11th June 2023
A Message from the NSW President

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Can’t believe we are already half way through the year and how short the days are at the moment, this week chasing the sun already at 4pm.

As the financial year comes to a close now is the time to check in with some of our fantastic sponsors as they are offering some great EOFY deals on gear and services.

For those who attended our May Drop In, I’m sure you will agree what great night it was with our guest Danny Ruhlmann ACS generously sharing his experience on shooting the feature ‘True Spirit”. Thank you Danny.

Our June Drop In next Thursday June 15th from 6pm is shaping up to be equally exciting with special guest cinematographer Dave Cameron NZCS ACS in town and presenting a elemental themed night titled “Fire & Water” as he takes us behind the shooting of  two recent telefeatures, “In a Flash” ,heavily based around water, and “Ablaze” which is based around fire. We are lucky to have Dave in town and available to share his award winning work with us.

Now is the time to start thinking about work that you might want to enter in the 2023 ACS NSW Awards  with entries opening on August 1st and closing on Aug 21st.  Get your entries organized now so they are ready to go when submissions open.

For those considering applying for accreditation this year please check the criteria on our website and contact me on cconstantine@cinematographer.net.au so we can discuss your submission and work on the strongest possible application.  Applications will open on Sept 1st and close on Sept 21st 2023, so please do not leave this preparation to the last minute.

Entries are still open for the Sony Catchlight Film Festival until Sunday June 25th  so get your entries in now.

Our friends at Canon and Sun Studios are hosting a fabulous workshop with award winning cinematographer, Dave May on June 22nd so don’t forget to register to attend, details and a link are below in this newsletter.

For those unaware, The Sydney Film Festival has just opened with some great screenings at various venues across Sydney. Take a look at the programme for some inspiring viewing.

Enjoy your long weekend everyone and please take the time to look after your own mental and physical health and check in with your fellow cines and colleagues…it doesn’t take much to ask “RU Ok?” but it can make a big difference.

All the best,
Carolyn

at ACS HQ

In conversation with

Dave Cameron NZCS ACS

Join us at HQ this month with special guest cinematographer, Dave Cameron NZCS ACS.
Dave will be taking us all behind the scenes of two features with the elemental connections of
fire: 'Ablaze' and water: 'In a Flash'.
Based on two true stories, 'Ablaze' (shot in B&W) recounts a fire that broke out in the basement of Ballantynes department store in Christchurch in 1947. 500 employees kept working and hundreds of shoppers roamed through the showrooms or chatted over tea and cakes in the cafe. Management were quick to reassure staff and customers alike that, despite a bit of smoke, there was nothing to worry about. Hours later, 41 people were dead.
'In a Flash' follows six Elim College students and their teacher who tragically lost their lives in a flash flood at Mangatepopo Gorge, New Zealand, in April of 2008.

Lots to talk about, see you there!

Thinking of Applying for ACS Accreditation?

If you are thinking of applying for ACS Accreditation this year please be aware that the window for 2023 opens for three weeks only on September 1 and closes September 21.

We encourage you to start thinking about getting your submission together and passing it by your Accredited President, or an ACS Accredited member, for advice well before then; preferably in July or August. This process helps minimise the Assessment panel having to look at submissions that are "not up to scratch".  Please don't leave it to the last minute as it's a busy time of the ACS year.
Accreditation assessments are not a mystery. The process involves a panel of ten ACS Accredited cinematographers, who work across as many genres as possible, gathered together to assess the work. The submitted works of the applying cinematographers are screened and assessed before voting on each submission by secret ballot. To gain Accreditation a minimum of 8 of the panel of 10 must vote in the positive. It's tough but if the work is considered a high enough standard you should get through.

It's best you check out the ACS Accreditation page on our website so you make sure you qualify to apply and read the guidelines.  https://cinematographer.org.au/acs-accreditation/

Thanks again to to Danny Ruhlman ACS for giving such a detailed and interesting presentation on the massive undertaking that was 'True Spirit'. The hit Netflix feature involved shooting at sea but also many weeks in breakaway yacht sets on gimbals and both day, night and storm scenes shot in a water tank.
A very well attended and social event. Here Danny discusses the collaboration with David Knight ACS and his company Rotorhead for many of the aerial sequences.

RADIANCE
(dir: Rachel Perkins, 1998)
Adapted by Louis Nowra from his play, Radiance is a refreshingly direct and involving Australian film. It is carried by its wonderful cast – Rachel Maza, Deborah Mailman and Trisha Morton-Thomas as three sisters who reluctantly gather in a Queensland town after the death of their mother, forced into each other’s company for the first time in years.

As day turns into a long and unforgettable night, grievances are aired, truths told, and the past is put into life-changing perspective.

Shot by Warwick Thornton as a rising star with celebrated short film 'Green Bush' (2006) and feature 'Samson & Delilah' (2009) yet to come.
