Dear Friends and Colleagues,
What a wonderful night at the AGNSW celebrating the work of our NSW members last weekend as we all gathered face to face for our ACS NSW Branch Awards for 2022.
There was a strong feeling of community throughout the night, with some members attending the awards for the first time sitting along side academy award winning legends Russell Boyd AO ACS ASC and his wife Sandy Boyd and John Seale AM ACS ASC with his wife Louise Seale. We were delighted to have them all in attendance.
Ray Martin AM, our Master of Ceremonies for the evening, did a stellar job guiding us through 22 categories of amazing work. We are always so grateful to Ray for his total professionalism and passion for what we do. As a thank you gift this year, he was presented with a wonderful framed photo by our very own Piet De Vries ACS who was able to present it to Ray in person.
We were honoured to have international journalist, Chris Reason as our Guest of Honour this year. His address to the room was both inspiring and sobering and I thank all our colleagues who put their lives at risk to bring the world the stories and images from the front line.
Equally inspiring was our Welcome to Country by Uncle Micheal West whose story telling and humour helped set the tone for the rest of the evening.
Congratulations to all our winners, the standard and variety of work showcased was truly inspiring. All our gold winners will go onto the National Awards to be held here in Sydney on May 6th next year.
A big congratulations to our 3 newly accredited NSW members, Casimir Dickson ACS, Vance Burberry ACS and John Varga ACS. Receiving your letters is truly a career highlight and it was fantastic to hear about the varied careers of our 3 recipients.
We had a number of special awards this year and I was truly honoured to present Andrew Collier with the ACS Award of Appreciation for a lifetime of service to camera departments and the screen industry. Thank you Andrew for attending and for your very moving words. We wish you a long and happy retirement.
Our National President, Erika Addis presented John Lanser the Ron Windon ACS Outstanding Contribution Award for his ongoing legal counsel over the decades. Congratulations and thank you John for all your guidance.
We were also excited to see Liam Brennan winning the Drew Llewelyn ACS Camerimage Scholarship this year. Liam would already be winging his way to Poland as we speak.
A big thank you to Geoff Anderson and Tim Stackpool from Sonic Sight who ran all our AV and live-stream on the night. I can’t tell you how amazing it was to watch everyone's work on the big screen. The level of talent in the room was phenomenal. Many thanks to all our judges and NSW committee who worked very hard in pulling our awards night together.
Our biggest winner of the night was Jono Le Grice who received the Ross Wood Snr ACS Judges Awards for Best Entry for his entry in the Student Cinematography Category titled “Echoes of Darkness”. This was no mean feat considering the field of talent on the night. Congratulations Jono!
Our next Drop In next Thursday Nov 17th from 6pm is a fantastic double bill where Jono Le Grice will screen his winning short film and speak about his work before our friends from Panavision present a really informative optics night with an emphasis on modification and customizing lenses. We will also have all the winning awards plaques available for collection to those unable to attend on the night.
As part of NSW Small Business Month, ACS NSW has organized 2 workshops in association with Creative Business Plus. The first, titled “What’s It Worth” is on Monday Nov 21st to be held both at HQ and online. It will address the challenges of charging for creative products and services. The second is on Friday Nov 25thand is an online only titled “Time management for Creatives”. Please register through the Eventbrite links in this newsletter to attend either session.
Don’t forget our next Cinekids Workshop is on Saturday 10thDec and that we are looking for a new cohort of budding filmmakers so please spread the word.
Stay safe everyone.
All the best,
Carolyn
