AUGUST 2020

NSW President's Welcome

Dear ACS members and friends,

I am honoured to be appointed as your new ACS NSW President, this is indeed a historic moment in the evolution of the society and I look forward to leading us progressively into the future and bringing absolutely everyone along with us.

I’d like to thank all the NSW Presidents that have proceeded me, in particular David Lewis ACS, Roger Lanser ACS and Calvin Gardner ACS all who have made a tremendous contribution as leaders of NSW and left the branch in the strong position it finds itself today. You all have been so supportive and I thank you for your generosity of  knowledge and camaraderie.

Welcome to our new NSW executive and committee with Velinda Wardell ACS and Kevin Hudson as our Vice Presidents, Aleksei Vanamois continuing as our Secretary, Sidat De Silva as Treasurer and David Wakeley ACS as Asst Treasurer.

Thanks to our returning NSW committee members Anna Howard ACS, Calvin Gardner ACS, Sissy Reyes, Lizz Vernon, Ben Allan ACS CSI, Susan Lumsdon, Chris Bland and a big welcome to new committee members Simeon Bryan and Mikey Hamer. Thank you all for stepping up to help make a difference. I would encourage all members to contact any of the committee if you have ideas or suggestions that you would like us to discuss when we meet.

Don’t forget today is your last chance to submit your work to the 2020 ACS NSW Awards.

August 1st (09:00) ~ August 25th (18:00)

Entry via our website. The Entry Form is only open at these times.      Late entries  WILL NOT be accepted.
2020 ACS Awards Entry

IMPORTANTDue to Covid-19, ACS will NOT be accepting any physical entries this year. Physical entries means DVD, BluRay Disk, Hard Drives (including USB sticks). All entries will need to be uploaded, or in exceptional circumstances, streamed.

The deadline is COB today, Tuesday August 25th  6pm.
All entries can be submitted and uploaded online through the members directory of the ACS website link above.

We have some really exciting initiatives for the ACS including a world first study into Australian cinematographers that is currently in development in conjunction with the Deakin University. Later in the year all members will be asked to make their contribution to this important piece of work via a survey.

This year has been a very challenging time for everyone including our industry and now more than ever it’s important to keep an eye out for friends and colleagues. Checking in on someone can make a big difference.

Many thanks to Murray Lui, Lucas Tomoana and Bonnie Elliot ACS as they joined me in my first role as NSW President for such an insightful Diversity in Action August Drop In.
The night took us to some remote places in this vast land and our guests reflected so eloquently on their beginnings in this industry, cultural perspectives and insights as well as some of their more recent projects. It was truly a great night that showcased the broad talent and generosity of spirit that shapes the ACS. This webinar will soon be available to members to watch on the new look ACS website.

I look forward to working with our amazing sponsors as the industry opens up and we navigate our way out of this pandemic and I would encourage all members to support the sponsors that support us as work starts to return.

When I was first starting out in this industry someone said to me “Oh it's a bad time to be starting out, we are in the middle of a recession” my response was “well, that means it can only get better…” and 30 years later here we are. If you have a passion for something don't let anyone discourage you!!

Stay safe everyone, don’t drop the ball and I'm looking forward to seeing you all again in person just as soon as it’s possible.

All the best,

Carolyn
