A Message from the NSW President
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
As we start the new financial year, let’s hope budgets get locked in early so that production picks up soon; it’s been a little quiet out there.
Our annual NSW Branch General Meeting where committee members are voted in will be held next month on Monday August 7th at 630pm at HQ in North Sydney and on Zoom. For all those considering joining the NSW Branch Committee or running for an office bearer position, now is the time to send in your nomination forms and/or proxy votes. All members are welcome to attend this meeting either in person or online via the Zoom link and all financial corporate members are eligible to vote. Please see below links to nomination & proxy forms along with a zoom link.
A big thank you to Dave Cameron NZCS ACS who was our June Drop In special guest. I received some great feedback from our members who attended and Dave also really enjoyed sharing his experience.
Our July Drop In to be held on Thursday July 20th from 6pm welcomes Bonnie Elliott ACS who will take us behind the scenes on her last year of shooting with Director, Daina Reid on projects such as the Australian feature, Run Rabbit Run and the TV series shot in Chicago titled Shining Girls. It’s shaping up to be a great night so see you there!
A huge thank you to National Sponsor, Cutting Edge, who last month hosted a social and really informative event for our 2023 National Awards Nominees.
This month, our friends at VA in collaboration with Gecko Cam are hosting a Lens Night event at their premises in Moore Park, Sydney on Wednesday July 19th. Please register your attendance on the link below in this newsletter.
I have been contacted by an overseas member who has asked about ACS members that have experience climbing and shooting at high altitudes for an upcoming international project. If this is an area of speciality for you please contact me directly at cconstantine@cinematographer.net.au and I can put you in touch.
Congratulations to ARRI Australia and TAFE NSW, Randwick Campus for the launch of the new ARRI Accredited Course. This is a fantastic initiative that will give TAFE students access to learn on some of the latest cameras and accessories. Enrollments are currently open and fee free to many.
A reminder to those considering applying for accreditation this year that now is the time to contact me so we can get the process rolling and still leave plenty of time to put together a strong submission.
NSW Branch Awards entries open on August 1st this year and close on Aug 21 so start getting your submissions sorted so you are ready to go in a few weeks.
Our ACS NSW Branch Awards ceremony will be held this year at the Hilton Sydney on the night of Saturday November 4th 2023, so save the date for what will be another amazing social event celebrating the impressive work of our NSW members with support of our wonderful sponsors.
All the best,
Carolyn

Join us at HQ this month with special guest cinematographer, Bonnie Elliott ACS. Bonnie will be sharing production experiences from a number of recent projects including the recently released psychological horror feature Run Rabbit Run starring Sarah Snook post her starring stint in Succession.
Variously described as sepulchral (gloomy, dismal, suggesting death - I had to look it up!), Australian Gothic, sweepingly foreboding, it will be fascinating to discuss the process Bonnie went through to define the distinctive look of this film.
Bonnie will also discuss her work on Apple TV series Shining Girls, shot in Chicago, as well as her set-up cinematography for the new Elisabeth Moss series The Veil, just completed in Europe.

Thinking of Applying for ACS Accreditation?
If you are thinking of applying for ACS Accreditation this year please be aware that the window for 2023 opens for three weeks only on September 1 and closes September 21.
We encourage you to start thinking about getting your submission materials together and passing them by your Accredited President (or an another ACS Accredited member) for advice well before then; preferably in July or August. This process helps minimise the Assessment panel having to look at submissions that are not suitably prepared. Please don't leave it to the last minute, as it's a busy time of the ACS year.
Accreditation assessments are not a mystery. The process involves a panel of ten ACS Accredited cinematographers, who work across as many genres as possible, gathered together to assess the work. The submitted works of the applying cinematographers are screened and assessed before voting on each submission by secret ballot. To gain Accreditation a minimum of 8 of the panel of 10 must vote in the positive. It's tough but if the work is of a high enough standard, you should get through.
It's best you check out the ACS Accreditation page on our website to make sure you qualify to apply and then to read the guidelines. https://cinematographer.org.au/acs-accreditation/

BENEATH CLOUDS
(dir: IVAN SEN, 2002)
"This minimal, spare film has an incredible beauty. Long-time collaborator of the director, Allan Collins ACS cinematography is stunning"
"Having seen quite a lot of Ivan Sen's previous work, I can understand how Beneath Clouds brings together the issues of a world he knows well. The question of aboriginality, the despair, the anger, the resentment, the confusion that goes with that identity in this country is explored with great compassion here. Both young performers, Danielle Hall and Damien Pitt are extraordinarily good in bringing these two wounded children to life. I think this is one of the great Australian films of recent years."
