A Message from the NSW President
|

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
The ACS NSW Branch Awards 2022 presented by our new major NSW sponsor TDC and National sponsor Fujinon- Fujifilm are fast approaching. I’m excited to announce that we are back face to face this year at a fantastic new venue, the Art Gallery of NSW on Saturday 5th November 2022. We also have a new format this year, with more opportunity to mingle with guests both before and after the ceremony that will celebrate all the amazing cinematography of our NSW members. We are delighted to have international news journalist, Chris Reason, as our guest of honour this year, He was the first Australian journalist to cross the border into Ukraine when the war broke. Whether you have submitted work or not, please join us for what will be a very social night for both cinematographers and sponsors.
Thank you to our dedicated accredited judges, our Chair of Judges, Aleksei Vanamois and some of our NSW committee who put in a mammoth effort a couple of weekends ago. It was fantastic to have all the judges back face to face at HQ.
This months Drop In will be of great interest to both members starting out, and those who are more established and looking to upscale and move to the next level. Join finance expert, Andrew Barley from Macquarie Commercial Finance, insurance guru, Joe Lo Surdo from Sura and emerging cinematographer David Luff who will all be sharing their knowledge and experience that you wished you’d known earlier. This is a great opportunity to ask the tricky questions and share your own stories.
A big congratulations to Tom Gleeson, Ben Allan ACS CSI ,Toby Oliver ACS and the NSW Committee for an incredibly successful September Drop In demystifying HDR. If you missed the night don’t forget to catch up with the information packed video produced. There is a link below.

Thank you to our new Cinekids co-ordinator, Elena de Brujne who held a very successful Cinekids workshop recently. A big thanks to Videocraft for sponsoring the day and David Lewis ACS for helping out and taking some great photos. We are still looking to expand our NSW Cinekids cohort as many of the original members have now graduated. Please spread the word and SAVE the DATE of Saturday Dec 10th for the next Cinekids session.
Congratulations to Qld member Liam Brennan who will be heading to Camerimage as the recipient of the Drew Llewellyn ACS Camerimage Scholarship and to NSW member Vance Burberry who will be receiving the Cameraimage Award for achievement the field of music video. Vance will be honoured as a special guest as well as a judge in the music video category, a fantastic achievement.

David Luff is a recent AFTRS graduate and former ACS NSW Committee member who has been very busy working on a variety of formats internationally throughout this year as a camera operator and AC. He will be sharing a list of hard won insights from his first 18 months in the business.

Georges Cameras have teamed up with Agender to co-host an exciting event bringing together three industry renowned female image makers to discuss their unique journey and their craft.

The event will be held as a discussion panel with photographers Karima Asaad and Isabella Moore, and cinematographer Tania Lambert ACS; moderated by Angela Liang, co-founder of Agender. All three speakers will be shedding light on their experience in the industry to educate and inspire a new generation of young image makers at the start of their careers.

Emerge Film Networking Sydney is back for another night of inspiration and networking for emerging filmmakers. Join us for a panel talk and Q&A with some of the country’s best new DOPs as they discuss the challenging emerging phase of their careers, featuring: Tyson Perkins (Mystery Road, Robbie Hood), Emma Paine (Spreadsheet, Christmas Ransom) and Lucca Barone-Peters (Soundtrack to Our Teenage Zombie Apocalypse, Suburban Wildlife), and moderated by Mohini Herse (creator of the upcoming SBS Digital Originals series Appetite).

It is our great pleasure to announce that Vance Burberry, renowned Australian cinematographer, will be this year's recipient of the CAMERIMAGE Award for Achievements in the Field of Music Videos.

We are delighted to announce the inaugural Cut Short Film Competition is now open for entries. This new short film competition has been developed to support the arts industry in Sydney and beyond and provide a platform for the creative development of local and emerging filmmakers. The categories are Primary School, High School, University/TAFE and Open. The prize pool is over $10,000. The Cut Short Film Competition has been initiated and proudly supported by Sutherland Shire Council
This year’s theme is ‘Connected to Nature’ with submitted films requiring at least 50% of the film being shot within the Sutherland Shire Council local government area.
