ACS NSW
13th February 2022
A Message from the NSW President

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Following our recent ACS National AGM, I’m delighted to welcome Erika Addis as our new ACS National President. Erika will be taking over from Ron Johanson OAM ACS who has led our society for the past 14 years with great dedication, passion and humour. A huge thank you to Ron and we hope you enjoy some of that extra time away from the desktop. We warmly welcome Erika who will do a stellar job continuing to grow and build our society.

Our February Zoom Drop In will be held this Thursday 17th February at 7pm and showcases the work of Dale Bremner ACS. Dale will be talking to Anna Howard ACS about some of his recent overseas projects in Morocco, Cairo and Lebanon. Definitely a Drop In not to be missed so please don’t forget to register on the link below. We are hoping to resume our face to face Drop Ins in March if Covid numbers continue to trend down.

March also sees the opportunity for ACS members to participate in two online workshops tailored specifically for creatives in a freelance industry. The first on March 2nd, “Being Well” addresses mental health in a creative industry. The second on March 31st,“Money Is Not a Dirty Word” addresses all things financial when working freelance, on contract or in a small business. Monica Davidson is an excellent speaker and presenter and I encourage you to take this chance to experience her workshops. The workshops are free for members so please register through the links below.

A big congratulations to NSW member, Nicola Daley ACS who just won Best Cinematography at the International Cinephile Society Awards for her work on Benediction. Congratulations also to Ari Wegner ACS and Greig Fraser ACS ASC who have both been nominated for 2022 BAFTA and Academy Awards. Good luck to your both.

At our recent National AGM, our National Cinekids coordinator, David Lewis ACS, announced he would be stepping down from his role. I would like to thank David and his team for all the hard work organising the fabulous workshops for our Cinekids, both in person and via Zoom when the pandemic hit. As you would have seen from David’s report in our last newsletter, many of the Cinekids have gone on to make a career in our industry and we have many promising younger members coming though.

If you are interested in passing your knowledge down to the next generation and think you might like to contribute to our Cinekids programme or perhaps hold a hands on workshop for our adult members, please contact me directly at cconstantine@cinematographer.net.au

Stay well everyone,

All the best,
Carolyn

To Australian Cinematographers Society,

Hello, this is Chiara. I am contacting you on behalf of The Japan Foundation, Sydney regarding our upcoming exhibition, continuum: Independent animation from Japan and Australia, running from February 18 to July 2, 2022.

This free exhibition celebrates 14 vibrant and subtly subversive works of contemporary independent animation from filmmakers across Australia and Japan, featuring recent video works from award-winning filmmakers including Kōji Yamamura and Nicholas Tory, as well as animation studio PAW Media and social enterprise Tjanpi Desert Weavers. Connected by the concept of continuum as expressed through separate yet coalescing moments, these films tell us much about ourselves, often challenging long-held narratives surrounding our relationship to nature, history and each other. Objects, sketches and other media that document the intricate processes of animation production will also be on display.
