AUGUST 2020

NSW President's Welcome

Dear Members and Friends,

Well it's been a busy first month with NSW awards judging well underway and accreditation applications starting to come in. Thank you to all our judges for putting in huge amounts of  time to judge all the entries for what is shaping up to be a fantastic virtual awards night to be held on Saturday October 31st... keep the night free to join us.

Our #whosinyourcrew campaign has been a great success with so many of you contributing some great photos of all the talented people that make up your crew, thank you to everyone involved. Please let's make this awareness of who's in our crews forefront when you are next crewing up.
Our monthly Expat Zoom get together continues to be a great success and I thank David Wakeley ACS for organising such a great initiative for our members across the globe.
We have a great ACS Drop In organised for you this month with cinematographer Ben Jasper in conversation with one of our new committee members, Simeon Bryan,  taking us to Bollywood.
As our industry starts to get busier please be vigilant so we continue to move forward and please support our amazing ACS sponsors as jobs start to come in.
Stay safe everyone.

Carolyn

Ben will be in conversation with new NSW committee member and cinematographer Simeon Bryan.
Ben Jasper began his career in the Camera Dept in 1992 Straight after Graduating with a BA in film and television from Curtin University in Western Australia.

In 2007, after the birth of his son Archie, Ben “retired” from working as assistant/operator and committed to a career as a director of photography.
In that same year Ben and his family relocated to Shanghai to capitalise on the upcoming Olympics and World Fair. This turned out to be a very fortunate move.

Ben has, in the years since that move, been consistently working with world-class directors on every continent on the planet.
He has shot groundbreaking global campaigns for BMW, sent motorbikes flying of the Grand Canyon for Mountain Dew. Searched the ancient alleyways of Varensi for lost love for American Tourister.  Locked down half of Johannesburg CBD for a parade for Samsung, and worked with  Wong Kar Wai and associates to shoot a 3d film for K pop superstar Jolin to play on specially installed screens in the concert venues of her world tour.  During this time he was nominated for and received several international awards.

In 2014/2015 he was invited to shoot the middle schedule of Bollywood blockbuster “BANG BANG” which resulted in what Andy Armstrong, the 2nd Unit Director (The amazing Spiderman 1 and 2, Thor, Gangs of New York etc) called the best car crash he had shoot in 50 odd years in the Business.

After this Ben returned to commercials, as well as working on his own passion project set in the Himalaya's.

In 2018/2019 Ben re-united with the director from “BANG BANG” to shoot “WAR” another Bollywood blockbuster shot in 9 countries over a gruelling 148 day schedule. "WAR” released in September of 2019 and quickly became the highest grossing Bollywood film of 2019, as well achieving the highest opening Day in Bollywood history, and entering the top  ten list of the highest earning Bollywood Films of all time.
