Our guests at the September Drop In will be Tom Swartz of Rosco
and NSW member Ross Emery ACS. Tom will present Rosco's new Silk® 205 and Silk® 305 LED fixtures. Ross will discuss his recent film "Woman in Gold" with Helen Mirren DBE and how his collaboration with Director and Production Designer shaped the "Look" of the film.
Here's what Rosco has to say about the new lamps: "Silk Technology - Remastered" The Silk Family of LED Soft Lights just doubled in size - from two fixtures to four - by adding two new, slim-profile, "strip" configurations. When we added the Silk 110 to the range - it was pointed out that several LED manufacturers offer 1×1 and 2×1 fixture profiles, but no one really offered any options with a smaller vertical footprint. With the addition of the Silk 205 and Silk 305, designers, broadcasters, and filmmakers now have access to a two-foot and three-foot (respectively), slim-profile soft light that's less than 10" tall - including the yoke. The compact nature of the Silk 205 and Silk 305 makes them perfect for small studios - especially studios created in "found space" - that don't have the ceiling height to accommodate a full 1×1 or 2×1 fixture. This new Silk configuration is also appealing for anyone that wants to mount the fixture vertically or for those that work in product photography as narrow strips of light are often more appealing in these conditions than squares and rectangles of light."

Ross Emery ACS will present: "Woman in Gold", finding the "Look". A visual collaboration with Director and Production Designer. A frank discussion about the way we go from first reading of a script to
making decisions that ultimately determine how the film appears onscreen.

Ross will cover:
Visual references from various sources including painting, period news images
other films and still photography. Analysing period technology to reference the look of the period in which the film is set. Testing film stocks, lenses and camera systems. Production design and colour theory. Maintaining the look during shooting. How your dailies look will ultimately determine what you can do during the DI. Di Grading, how to convince a room of producers that you are right and they are all wrong when it comes to colour grading. To illustrate his presentation Ross will have a multitude of production stills and make up test images and a Blu-ray disc from which he will screen selected scenes from the film.

This will be a great Drop In. Thursday 21st September at ACS HQ. Doors open from 6pm with proceedings kicking of at 6:30 or thereabouts.
Awards Judging
Judging of work entered into the 2017 Awards has been completed and recipient lists are now being compiled and will soon be sent to the relevant plaque makers. To see if your name will be on one of those plaques be sure to be at the 2017 NSW & ACT Awards for Cinematography which will take place in Sydney in November. From our President: We have just completed the 2017 NSW judging procedures and once again I'm in great awe of the quality of the cinematography of our NSW & ACT members. Stunning, beautiful and very evocative, the work this year is of a very high standard across all the categories and the Awards night is bound to be a fantastic event. To all our judges, well done.
I'd like to say thank you very much for your time and dedication for being part of this year's judging panel. I'm aware it takes out considerable weekend time and can be gruelling and a little repetitive. We think it a very fair and just system of judging and doing it this way keeps it all honest and true. I'm sure the winners in all categories are appreciative of your dedication and time volunteered to the society as much as I am.
