August Drop In

Our August Drop In will feature cinematographer Ben Allan ACS and director Clara Chong who will demonstrate and discuss the camera systems they used recently to create a narrative drama which will be shown in a new, purpose built theatre at Taronga Zoo.  The theatre will feature an IMAX scale screen that curves around the audiences with a 5:1 aspect ratio.

Ben and Clara will discuss the challenges and solutions to telling a story in the 5:1 aspect and will show the 4.6K URSA Minis and the specially built “Trident” triple camera rig that they used on the film.
Ben will also show live 4K images, through the URSAs, of the different looks he was able to capture by using Angeniuex & Zeiss lenses for their different aesthetic qualities.

Matt Allard ACS & Clara Chong discuss a set up

They will discuss the workflow they designed to handle around 3 Terabytes of RAW data per day while keeping creative and quality control of their images.This was an interesting and challenging project for Ben and Clara and is very reminiscent of the Cinerama widescreen process of the 1950s. Also involved, as A camera operator, was Matthew Allard ACS who brought to the table his considerable technical knowledge and experience for this complex shoot.

Members, sponsors and their guests are invited to make their way to ACS HQ (address below) on Thursday August 18th. Doors open at 6pm for a 6:45pm or so kick off.

ACS NSW 2016 Annual General Meeting

Dear NSW ACS member,
You are advised that the annual general meeting (AGM) of the NSW branch of the ACS will be held in just under two weeks’ time at:
Time: 6:30pm sharp
Date: Thursday 25th August 2016
Location: ACS HQ, Level 2, 26 Ridge Street, North Sydney, NSW, 2060

Below is link for you to download a committee nomination form and you are invited to nominate either yourself or another member for available positions which are:
Committee members (10); President, Vice President 1, Vice President 2, Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer.
The following conditions apply to any and all nominations:
1: The nominating member must be currently financial (i.e. you must be up to date with ACS NSW membership);
2: If you are nominating another person for a position they must also be financial and they must be aware that you are nominating them (they must also be aware of the requirements for a position, see ‘further information’ below);
3: If there is more than one nomination for an executive position or more than ten nominations for committee member positions then there will be a vote for that position at the AGM;
4: If you are unable to attend the AGM personally then you may ask an attending financial member to vote on your behalf but they must have it in writing (and signed by you) that they are acting as proxy for your vote and you must also include who you are voting for and for what position;
5: If you are nominating for an executive position (i.e. President/VP/Sec/Treasurer) then the person being nominated must have some former experience in a similar position (this does not mean that you must have been, for example, a committee President before but it does mean you have some form of experience at this level to ensure the continued smooth running of the NSW branch); if you are nominating for a committee member position then no experience is necessary but commitment is;
6: Any nominations received after the closing date given above will not be accepted and will be void;
7: The form is simple to fill out: place your name in the top box then any nominated person in the relevant field. If you are wanting to name more than one person for committee positions, then you may do so on another sheet and attach it to your nomination form.
FURTHER INFORMATION:
The committee is run entirely by committed volunteers and comprises 11 regular meetings on the first Monday of each month at the HQ (there is no January meeting). If you feel that you are unable to attend at least 9 of the 11 meetings (either because of distance to travel to the HQ or known work commitments) it is advisable to hold off your own nomination. Aside from the meetings the committee is actively involved in several events that require the dedication of the group to ensure the event’s success. These include (for example) the setting up and manning of promotional booths at various events (e.g. SMPTE, AFTRS, etc.); the annual awards night (and run-up to it); the monthly drop-ins plus many, many, more ways to become actively involved within the society.
All age groups, membership categories and fields are encouraged to become involved.
The closing date for nominations is Thursday 18th August 2016 at midnight. Any nominations received after this time will be void. You can either return your completed nomination to me at smunro@cinematographer.net.au or you can mail it to the HQ – the address is both on the form and above.
All current committee and executive members are advised that they will need to submit a nomination for themselves if they wish to continue with the committee over the next year.
Warm regards to you all,
Steve Munro
ACS NSW State Secretary
