July Drop In
Over the past fifty years journalist Ray Martin (Honorary ACS member & regular volunteer Host of our Awards Nights) has won fame and fortune in front of the camera. His TV reporting and presentations have won him a record five Gold Logies, twenty- plus Silver Logies and a range of other awards even an Order of Australia for his contribution to journalism, along with his wide-ranging charity work. But, it was only last year - when Melbourne University Press released his third book Ray Martins World - that we discovered the private passion of this very public figure. Photography. In fact, it has been for most of his long journalism career. Its only been in recent times that Ray has been willing to talk openly about this secret obsession. Incidentally, Ray is also quite open in acknowledging the debt he owes to cinematographers and ACS members hes worked with on programmes like Four Corners & Sixty Minutes.
Ray Martin with the legendary Sir Don Bradman |
(Legendary shooters like David Brill and Andy Taylor ACS, to name just a couple.) Ray unashamedly admits to stealing tips and ideas from these shadow chasers, about everything from framing shots to lighting techniques. My scripts always made them look good and won them a heap of awards anyway!!, he says with a laugh. (We think he was joking.) Ray Martin labels himself as just another snapper in the long and glorious tradition of street photographers. Ken Duncan, the iconic landscape master - who launched Rays photo book late last year says his friend Ray has an uncanny eye for pictures and moments. Hes like the Energizer bunny. You cant contain him. All of us love taking photos and talking about them. So, we thought wed invite Ray Martin to tell some war stories of his years on the road & take a look at some of his images from around the world. Join Ray at ACS HQ on Thursday 17th July. As usual doors open at 6pm with proceedings kicking off sometime before 7pm. HQ address below.
