May Drop In

ACS NSW has been lucky to secure globe trotting cinematographer Danny Ruhlmann ACS for our May Drop In. Danny has recently returned from London and Sofia where he’s been shooting his latest US feature film “Survivor”. The film, set in London and New York, and is Danny’s second film with US based Australian director James McTeigue.

Danny Ruhlmann with actor Pierce Brosnan

As usual we will present a low key laid back evening where Danny will discuss the approach he has taken to break into the very competitive US feature market - interesting to all I’m sure. He will also screen footage from and discuss his first foray into the market, “The Raven”.

When shooting overseas Aussie DPs mostly don’t have the luxury and comfort of working with their usual crew so Danny will talk about his method of selecting a competent and hopefully harmonious crew from a largely unknown talent pool.

Make a date for this coming Thursday 15th May at ACS HQ (address below).

Doors will open at 6pm and proceedings will kick off sometime before 7pm.

Directing the Moving Camera Masterclass - Gil Bettman

Directing the Moving Camera Masterclass with Gil Bettman
Director, author and professor Gil Bettman of the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University in California, brings his Masterclass to AFTRS Open for the first time. This seminar redefines the overarching principles of how to use images to tell a story.

Students are taught how to apply those principals to the unique requirements of each scene in a film in order to devise a moving shot which strikes the perfect balance between motion and drama -- and best advances the story through that scene.

Over two days of theory and practical demonstrations (with actors) in the AFTRS professional film studio, you will learn, prepare, choreograph, shoot and critique a dialogue scene, putting Gil's teachings into practice in director/cinematographer teams of two.
This class will be limited to 14 students so get in quick!
Dates July 12th – 13th.
