NSW/ACT Awards

By phone, email, facebook, twitter - best ever they say - accolades are still coming from members, sponsors and guests congratulating ACS NSW and ACT on a wonderful Awards night at the Masonic Centre Sydney. Congratulations once again to all who went home with plaques and to recently accredited members and to our two new Life Members.

A link to the list of Awards winners is below and hopefully a link to Daniel Christie’s photos of the night will be on the NSW page soon.

Entry Media Available For Collection

Awards entry media (hard drive, USB stick, DVD disc) is now available for collection at ACS HQ and if you won an award but missed the Awards night your plaque is also waiting for you at HQ.

Next Drop In

John Seale ACS ASC & Geoffrey Wharton ACS

Members of the Awards judging panel often remark that even though their task is sometimes difficult it is certainly enjoyable. This is because they view entries which cover a broad cross section of work from Student Cinematography, Experimental and Specialised and up to and including big budget major films in Features - Cinema.

As judging progresses the panel is on the look out for what they consider to be an entry worthy of the Judges Award. Contrary to what many think, this award does not always go to a high profile big budget TVC or Feature Film and that was the case this year.

Our November Drop In is on Thursday 21st and will feature Geoffrey Wharton ACS, recipient of this years Judges Award and a Gold winner in Corporate & Educational for his work on Sunland Group.

Geoffrey will screen Sunland Group and discuss how he went about preparing and then shooting the project using lightweight motion control rigs and he’ll also discuss his thoughts on how to approach photographing architecture. If you’ve seen this film you’ll be aware of its very distinctive “look” - Geoff will talk about the thoughts and processes used to achieve it.

But wait!!!!!!!!!! Geoff will also screen a low budget film he recently shot in Tasmania called “Wing and a Prayer” which will lead into and promote a discussion on "There should be no excuse that the pictures are not great because there was no money”.

All in all, sounds like an informative evening so come along to ACS HQ on Thursday night. As usual doors will open at 6pm and Geoffrey’s first screening will start at about 7pm. HQ address is below.

Miller Camera Support Workshops

ACS sponsor Miller Camera Support are calling for "expressions of interest" from NSW members, read on:

In the past five years we have seen major changes in the types of cameras and lenses cinematographers use and also changes in the style of shooting with many accessories coming into the market to support “box” cameras such as C300/C500, F5/F55 or RED and DSLR’s such as 5D3 and 1DC. Miller feels that tripod and head design may require changes to meet the new paradigm.

With this in mind Miller is seeking ACS working members to participate in two focus think tank group sessions to discuss future product improvement, requirements and shooting trends. They are looking to conduct two separate workshops each consisting of six people and are asking for a commitment of two hours per workshop during the week of 2nd December, most likely Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th at ACS Headquarters North Sydney. A small cash incentive will be provided.

Please register your interest to: Charles Montesin at charles.montesin@miller.com.au or 0448111767

Miller has noted the names of members who have recently responded to an earlier request re these workshops.

The Canon EOS-1DC 4K Workshop

National ACS sponsor Canon has invited ACS members to be a part of “The Canon EOS-1DC 4K Workshop” which will take place at Sun Studios, 42 Maddox St, Alexandria, on Thursday December 5th from 6-9pm.

An RSVP is essential as spaces are limited to 75 and once again if you RSVP to say you’ll be there and subsequently can’t be please email back so that someone may take your place.

RSVP by 29th November to canonevents@canon.com.au
