Dean Semler's Big Night Out
Dean Semler ASC ACS, Angelina Jolie |
If you've never heard the sound of 1500 people standing and applauding at one time, then you should have been at the ASC Awards last Sunday in Los Angeles. I was lucky enough to attend and witness all those people applauding our very own Dean Semler ACS ASC when he was presented with his ASC Lifetime Achievement Award. It was such a proud moment and I detected a tear in Dean's eye, although it was difficult to really tell, because I certainly had a tear in mine. To make it even sweeter, Oscar®-winner Angelina Jolie presented the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award to Dean Semler, ASC, ACS who earned an Oscar and an ASC Award for Kevin Costners DANCES WITH WOLVES (1991). In 2007, his work on Mel Gibsons APOCALYPTO earned him a second ASC Award nomination. Semlers nearly 70 feature credits include such memorable films as CITY SLICKERS, LAST ACTION HERO, WATERWORLD, THE BONE COLLECTOR, WE WERE SOLDIERS, THE ALAMO, SECRETARIAT, Angelina Jolies directorial debut IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY and the upcoming MALEFICENT.
Celebrating with Dean were his wife Annie, daughter Ingrid and her husband along with many other Aussies including; Mandy Walker ACS ASC, Greig Fraser ACS, Peter Levy ACS ASC, Steve Mason ACS, Mark Gollnicht, Brad Shield ACS, Richard Merriman, David Knight ACS, Paul Jackson, Martin Cayzer, Ron Johanson ACS and many others. At the end of a wonderful evening Dean caught the red eye back to New Orleans for an 8.00am call, and spent the day working off a tracking vehicle in the freezing rain! You gotta love it!!!

Congratulations Dean, all of us at the ACS are so incredibly proud of you. Ron Johanson ACS, National President.

Emerging Cinematographer Award
The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia and the Australian Cinematographers Society will once again afford an emerging cinematographer the opportunity to win a generous cash incentive. The NFSA-ACS John Leake OAM ACS Award provides a cash prize of $5000 to an emerging cinematographer who is either currently studying cinematography at a tertiary institution or currently working in the film industry and is a current member of the ACS. The Award is named in honour of the Australian Cinematographers Society co-founder and industry icon, John Leake OAM ACS (1927-2009) and the winner, to be announced at the ACS National Awards in Canberra on Saturday 25 April 2011, can use the prize for any educational, training, or professional work which will further his or her cinematographic knowledge. "The partnership between the NFSA and the ACS is one of vital importance to the continued growth of our industry, said ACS National President, Ron Johanson ACS. Phil Balsdon Update
A Determined Phil Balsdon |
Those of you who have been following Phil Balsdon's progress over the past few months will already be aware that his medical team have now decided that there is nothing more they can do for him and it's time for Phil to go home and live his life as best he can. Contrary the prognosis from his doctors Phil is convinced he will be able to walk again but currently is confined to a wheelchair and will be for the foreseeable future. As you can imagine this will mean big changes around Phil and Alison's home, the first of which will be a specialized bed and the need for ramps to help him navigate his immediate surroundings and some form of battery powered transport to enable him to get away from the house and out and about. Obviously this will come at a great financial cost and to help Phil and Alison a donations fund has been set up. If you feel you'd like to help you can donate at: Account Name: Phil Balsdon Funds Bank: St George BSB: 112-879 Account: 412 028 704 You can also contact the following if you'd like to assist: Roslyn Simms - email Roslyn Dinah Withey - email Dinah Mitch Bailey - email Mitch David O'Toole - email David Alison Ray - email Alison
