Show Me The Magic - The Adventures of Don McAlpine ASC will premiere in Sydney at The Chauvel Cinema, Paddington on Wednesday 13th February at 6:30pm.
Don and Jeanette, his wife of 52 years will be in attendance, as well internationally awarded film maker Cathy Henkel and composer Nicolette Boaz. Martha Ansara, author of The Shadowcatchers, A History of Cinematography in Australia will host the Q & A after the screening.
As a child, Dons fascination with the magical images emerging from his darkroom set him off on a winding path that would eventually lead to the glittering lights of Hollywood, where, in 2009, he received the American Society of Cinematographers International Cinematographer of the Year Award in front of the foremost luminaries of the American film industry. In 2012 Don was awarded Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts highest honour, the Raymond Longford Award.
Show Me The Magic weaves together fascinating footage from Don's personal archive, his past work and life on set of two films, X Men Origins: Wolverine with Gavin Hood and Hugh Jackman and Mental with director PJ Hogan. The film also delves into his personal life and motivations and how he came to be one of the leading cinematographers of his time. As we travel with Don and his wife Jeanette back into their past in the Australian outback landscape they love so much, we peel back the layers of what Don calls "the beautiful deception" of cinema to illuminate the world behind the screen.
