A Word From Our President

Welcome to this edition of Focus, our last for this year.

It has been a busy and productive year for the NSW Branch of the ACS.

2011 saw the NSW branch taking full advantage of the newly commissioned National HQ with the continuation of the popular Thursday Night Drop Ins along with various industry evenings - all very well organised by David Lewis ACS.

Accreditation is the ultimate recognition by our peers and I would like to congratulate NSW member Dan Freene ACS on achieving his, well done Dan.

It is extremely pleasing to see the increase in the number of membership applications that we are receiving. The ACS is very committed to improving the standard of cinematography in all areas and I believe that being a member of the society does make a difference.

The NSW/ACT Awards which are the highlight on our calendar were this year extensively revamped leading to a much more social evening and a good time was had by all. Those of you who weren't there missed a great night of cinematography, conversation and partying.

All we as a Society are able to achieve would not be possible without the ongoing support of our state sponsors:

On behalf of the NSW Committee I would like to wish you all a great Christmas and New Year and a prosperous 2012.

Best wishes to you all,
Calvin Gardiner ACS
NSW State President

PS: The last event of the year is at the clubhouse on Thursday night, see you there.

A Speedy Recovery

ACS NSW would like to wish David Wakeley ACS a speedy recovery from his recent surgery. David and his wife Marianne work tirelessly for the ACS and our thoughts are with them both. See you back at HQ soon.

December Drop In - Garry Phillips ACS "Burning Man"

At the recent NSW/ACT Awards, Garry Phillips ACS was awarded a Gold plaque and also won the Ross Wood Snr ACS Memorial Judges Award For Best Entry 2011 for his work on his latest feature film Burning Man.

At the December "Drop In" Garry will present a selection of footage from the film. As is normal and, as has proved to be very popular, this will be followed by a very informal Q&A.

If you've seen it I'm sure you'd agree that Burning Man is a great looking film but even if you haven't caught up with it yet don't miss the opportunity to discuss with Garry his thought process and how he settled on the particular style of photography for this film.

Get to the HQ early to guarantee a front row seat - kick off is 6pm 15th December at:
Level 2
26 Ridge St
North Sydney

Congratulations John Seale AM ACS ASC

Congratulations to John Seale AM ACS ASC who has been recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award at this years Camerimage Festival in Poland - truly worthy recipient.

As you know John has been a guest at the HQ on previous occasions and hopefully we'll be able to coax him into coming along again to speak at one of our Thursday Night Drop Ins during 2012.

Congratulations Steve Munro

Steve Munro has just been appointed Secretary of the NSW branch. Steve has recently been doing a great job as Assistant Secretary and the NSW Committee now looks forward to working with him in his new role.

"Thirst" - Complimentary Ticket Offer

To celebrate the opening of the feature film, Thirst at the Chauvel cinema in Sydney in January, ACS NSW members are being offered a chance to win 10 complimentary tickets, an opportunity to meet the filmmakers and enjoy a complimentary drink after selected screenings.

Directed by Robert Carter, Thirst was photographed in outback NSW by multi award winning ACS NSW member Nicola Daley and those of us who have seen this film will agree that the cinematography has been very well executed.

On offer are 2 tickets for each Saturday night screening on the following dates January 14th, 21st, 28th and February 4th and 11th.

Winners will be selected from the best three word description of the trailer.

Dragon Image

Thank you to Dragon Image, ACS NSW sponsor, for the BBQ they put on for members in the first week of December.

Although ACS presence was somewhat underwhelming, those that went along enjoyed the evening and I'm sure were astounded with the Virtuoso Virtual Studio software that was demonstrated - very impressive.

This 3D computer generated set construction software is currently aimed at TV broadcast News, Sports and Weather style sets but keep your eyes open because it will soon be coming to a film set near you.

Michael of Dragon Image, aided by his colleague Mark and bosses Dominic and Suzzanah whipped up some great chops and sausages and a good night was had by those who were able to get there.

Dragon Image is pleased to offer ACS members the following discounts and promotions on presentation of their ACS membership card:

• Up to 20% off studio and equipment hire
• Up to 10% off Lightpro lighting and accessories
• 10% off lighting/camera workshops
• Access to monthly specials for ACS members only
• Free coffee from our coffee bar

Please visit the Dragon Image website for information about the company.

And Speaking of Awards

The ACS Archive which resides at the HQ is a treasure trove of film equipment from a past era. Most of the collection consists of cameras and lenses some dating back to the twenties and thirties but there is also a sprinkling of lighting, sound and projection equipment. It's well worth a look around when next you're at the HQ.

And while you're there you may see a forgotten Award from years gone by. We have quite a few uncollected Awards including Gold, Silver and Bronze plaques and a couple of Gold Tripods. We also have many Awards entries on various forms of media including optical discs and hard drives.

In the interest of preserving precious space at the archive these unloved Awards and entries will be given to charity if they remain uncollected by the end of January 2012. If you think the Archive contains something of yours contact Ted Rayment at the HQ and claim it otherwise out it will go.

Upcoming AFTRS Courses

The following two AFTRS courses will be held in early 2012:

SHOOTING HD ON THE CANON 5D (9-10 Feb 2012)

This hands-on course will show you how to shoot HD on the Canon 5D Mark II.

Through practical exercises you will explore the camera's imaging capabilities as well as techniques for getting the most out of its operation.

The class will shoot test footage across a range of environments which will then be critically evaluated. The fundamental differences between still photography and cinematography will also be addressed. You will leave feeling familiar with the camera and knowing when it is the appropriate choice for your shooting needs.

Please note participants are requested to bring in their own 5D or similar Canon cameras for the course.
