A Message from the NSW President
|
|
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Award Entries are in and judging starts this weekend. Many thanks to all our esteemed judges and committee volunteers for taking the time from their schedules for this very important process. I also want to thank entrants for their patience as we tested out our new website and uploading platform. It was working at absolute capacity in the final days before entry closure, and so despite some teething issues, we got there in the end!
The NSW/ACT Branch awards will be held at the Hilton in Sydney on Saturday 4th November, so please make sure to save the date.
A huge shout out to Lemac, who put on an amazing August Drop In at AFTRS. A hands on lens night showcasing 199 lenses that are all potentially available for your next production.
Our ACS NSW September Drop In will be back at HQ on Thursday September 21st @ 6pm and feature Jason Naran for Nektar presenting a great session on collaborating with a DIT. On route back from some blockbuster international shoots as well as presentations in China, Jason will have his full kit available for a hands on demonstration.
It’s been a busy week in the short film world and I’ve had the pleasure of attending the awards ceremony for the Sony Catchlight Film Festival which was a fantastic night showcasing some amazing upcoming talent. Our own NSW VP, Simeon Bryan was one of the judges along with Victorian DP, Stefan Duscio ACS. On the night, Simeon was also able to highlight the new Sony sponsored scholarship for female students studying cinematography at AFTRS which is a fantastic initiative.
This week I also attended the awards for the Lumix 72 hour Filmmaking Challenge that had finalists from all over the country. It was a great night with Panasonic & sponsors such as CR Kennedy giving away some excellent prizes. This was the first year of the challenge and I really hope that it continues as it's a wonderful platform for both emerging and established filmmakers to showcase their talents, which is just so important for the future of our industry.
Our major NSW sponsor, TDC and the VES (Visual Effects Society) along with the ACS will be hosting a Virtual Production Workshop at the TDC Studios on October 5th and 6th. This will be a really informative & popular event. Please refer to details for registration below in the newsletter.
At the end of last month Sony hosted a screening /Q & A session featuring Dan Freene ACS and his work on Wellmania which was a really well attended, enthusiastic night. The next Sony Screening will be held on Wednesday September 27th 630pm at the Events Cinema in George St, featuring DP, Bruce Young ACS and gaffer, Tommy Hankinson discussing their collaboration on The Last King of the Cross and work with the Sony Venice camera.
We are still looking to fill the position of AC Magazine Chair and so I encourage anyone that has an entrepreneurial streak, a love of cinematography and the desire to give back to our society and work with some great collaborators to please get in touch with our National President, Erika Addis at eaddis@cinematographer.net.au.
A reminder that Accreditation Applications close on Sept 21st so this is the last week to finalise your submissions.
Hope to see you at the next Drop In,
All the best,
Carolyn
