Vale Tony Tegg
From our National President:
I was saddened to learn from Martha Ansara about the passing of an extraordinary man and gaffer, Tony Tegg.
Being based in Melbourne at the beginning of my career, I first met Teggy on "The Hands of Cormac Joyce" which was being shot on Philip Island with John McLean ACS, John Seale, camera operator and David Lewis was camera assistant.
I think I may have worked after that, on a series with Teggy in Sydney, and he invited me to visit the set of "Don Quixote", which was being shot in a hangar at the old Essendon Airport in Melbourne. This was an inspiring moment for me as Teggy introduced me to Geoffrey Unsworth BSC, and I think I spoke the immortal words "Nice set, lots of lights!" to which Geoffrey Unsworth smiled and said "You are very observant". Teggy made that happen and so it was, that through the years he reminded me of that moment, a moment where I was awe struck and I always thanked him for that special introduction.
I worked with Teggy a number of times and always found him to be encouraging and supportive. He taught me a lot, as I was a young cinematographer who was wanting to be better, which he always encouraged and fostered, as long as you listened.
I lost touch with Teggy over the years and to hear this very sad news made me reflect on just who he was, and if Teggy hadn't shown interest or encouraged me the way he did, who knows what might have been.
RIP Tony Tegg and my sincere condolences to Danny and the Tegg family, along with a heartfelt thank you from a young kid who wanted to be better.
