A Message from the NSW President
|
|
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Awards Season is upon us and tickets are now on sale for the ACS NSW & ACT Branch Awards for Cinematography 2023 to be held in the ballroom at the Hilton Sydney on Saturday November 4th from 6pm, proudly sponsored by our Major NSW sponsor TDC and National Sponsor, Creamsource. Come help celebrate the best imagery and storytelling from our NSW & ACT members, it’s shaping up to be a really social night. Please book early if you can so we can keep across numbers for venue catering. For those booking group tables please note there are 8 guests per table and there is a discount booking link for Hilton accommodation in the Evenbrite booking link details for those that want to stay in the city.
Thank you all our amazing judges and NSW committee who dedicated their time and experience to a 4 day marathon judging event with judges viewing some really impressive work.
A big thanks to Jason Naran from Nektar who was our last Drop In Guest and generously shared with us his DIT set up and experience collaborating with DPs on some major productions.
Our next Drop In will be held on Thursday October 19th from 6pm at HQ featuring the new documentary Behind The Camera and featuring an amazing panel involved in the film including cinematographer and director, Neale Maude, Ray Martin AM, Daniel Eisenberg from the Australian War Memorial as well as two of the war cinematographers featured in the film Andy Taylor ACS and Micheal Cox. This is going to be a great first hand insight into working on the frontline in some of the toughest working conditions we can imagine.
I am delighted to announce that the A Wider Lens Report commissioned by the ACS in collaboration with Deakin University is a finalist in the Screenwell Awards 2023. The awards will be online on Tuesday October 10th at 9.30am for those that want to tune in. Just being a finalist is great recognition for all the work put into this world first report.
Last February our Drop In hosted Director, Clara Chong and producer/ DOP Ben Allan ACS CSI for an incredibly generous and insightful sharing of the making of their feature film Dark Noise. For those who would like to see the film it is screening at the Randwick Ritz along with a Q&A with Clara and Ben this Wednesday October 11th @ 630pm.
Congratulations to TDC for hosting such a successful Virtual Production Event this week and thank you to all those who helped out over the 2 day event.
I hope to see as many of you at the awards night as possible, it’s a great occasion to catch up with fellow cines, friends and sponsors.
All the best,
Carolyn

with Jason Naran from Nektar

Jason Naran is welcomed and introduced by Carolyn Constantine ACS (ACS NSW President)

Heartfelt thanks again to Jason Naran who gave a fantastic presentation on the support that a DIT can provide to cinematographers on-set.
His rig was a wonder to behold in terms of it's functionality as a hub for distributing and recording corrected images while shooting but also as a critical part of the overall image control workflow, grading and processing rushes and passing on critical metadata to the post team.
It also contained a special drawer for the cinematographer complete with 3 Arri Hi-5 wireless FIZ hand-controls.
Whilst some lamented the budget and time restrictions inherrent to local drama production, there was a real gleam in the eye of some of the younger members who could see the potential for a more stripped back version suitable for local conditions. Stay tuned for more developments!
